Mitchel is an impact crater in the Mare Australe quadrangle of Mars, located at 67.7°S latitude and 283.9°W longitude. It is 138.4 kilometers in diameter and was named after Ormsby M. Mitchel, an American astronomer and major general in the American Civil War. The name was approved in 1973, by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN).[1]

Nearby named craters include Gilbert not far to the east located under a crater diameter, Spallanzani further north, further south is Vishniac and south-southwest is Holmes. About two-thirds of the way to that crater is a ridge known as Dorsa Brevia, which literally means the "short ridges" or the "short hills".

The lower part of the crater belongs to Malea Planum whose crater topography is mainly flat, it has a rim which has higher areas to the southeast. East of the crater is Promethei Terra.
