The virus was confirmed to have spread to Panama on 9 March 2020.[2] One of the dead was a 64-year-old male, who also suffered from complications of diabetes and pneumonia.[3] Of those infected, 83 were admitted to hospital.[2] The infected individuals belong to the 29-59 age group and had each recently travelled abroad.[4] A 13-year-old girl died of Covid-19 on 23 March.[5] As of 25 June 2020, Panama reported 29,037 cases, 564 deaths, and 14,800 recoveries.[1]

Background

On 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that a novel coronavirus was the cause of a respiratory illness in a cluster of people in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, which was reported to the WHO on 31 December 2019.[7][8]

The case fatality ratio for COVID-19 has been much lower than SARS of 2003,[9][10] but the transmission has been significantly greater, with a significant total death toll.[11][9]
