The A1 motorway (Serbian: Аутопут А1 / Autoput A1) is a motorway in Serbia and with 554 kilometers (344 mi) it is the longest motorway in Serbia. It crosses the country from north to south, starting at Horgoš border crossing with Hungary and ending with Preševo border crossing with Republic of Macedonia. As a part of the European route E75 and Pan-European corridor X, connecting 4 of 6 largest Serbian cities (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Subotica), it is the most vital part of Serbian road network.

Route

Northern section

Northern section (Hungarian border - Subotica - Novi Sad - Belgrade) is 172 km long and is built between 1971 and 2013.

First subsection of this section which was opened is Belgrade (Batajnica) - Novi Sad. It was built between 1971 and 1975, but only right carriageway was constructed then. It is 56.3 km long, and it includes Beška Bridge on Danube river (2205 m), which is the longest bridge on Serbian roads. Next opened section was Novi Sad - Feketić, which was opened in 1986, and it is 44.7 km long. Again, only right carriageway was constructed. Because of dissolution of Yugoslavia and UN sanctions, construction of highway was temporarily stopped. Next opened section was Feketić - Horgoš (border with Hungary). It is 71 km long, and it was opened in 1997, and again only right carriageway was constructed. After right carriageway of highway was completed, construction of left carriageway could start. Left carriageway between Batajnica and Beška was completed in 2004, and now there was 32.2 kilometers of full-profile highway. Construction continued, and 19.1 km section from Beška to Novi Sad was completed in 2006. Next two sections were Novi Sad - Sirig and Žednik - Bikovo, both of them are 10 km long, and were opened in 2009. First 5.5 km of Novi Sad bypass were completed in 2010. In 2011 most of the highway was upgraded to full-profile, with completion of 93 km long sections Bikovo - Horgoš (border with Hungary), Sirig - Žednik and second Beška bridge. Finally, remaining 2.5 kilometers of Novi Sad bypass were completed, and this marked end of construction of northern section of A1 motorway.

Highway enters in Serbia in Bačka and passes by Subotica, Bačka Topola, Vrbas, Novi Sad, passes over Danube and enters Srem, passes by Inđija and Stara Pazova and arrives to Batajnica, suburb of Belgrade where is the beginning of Belgrade bypass. This part of A1 highway passes through Vojvodina which is part of Pannonian Basin, so this is very flat terrain and highway is going through many fields.

Belgrade city highway

Belgrade city highway (Serbian: Аутопут кроз Београд / Autoput kroz Beograd) is 29 km long urban highway which connects A3 highway and A1 highway passing by Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, Zemun, Novi Beograd, Voždovac and finishes at Bubanj Potok. It was constructed in 1970s and, until Belgrade bypass is completed, it is only highway connection between northern and southern parts of A1 highway. After completion of Belgrade bypass this highway will be turned into main city boulevard.

Belgrade bypass

Part of Belgrade bypass from Batajnica to Bubanj Potok which is 47.3 kilometers long is part of A1 highway. Part from Batajnica to Sava bridge (23.8 km) is a full-profile highway, while part from Sava bridge to "Straževica" tunnel (14.9 km) is a half-profile highway. Construction of rest of this part of bypass is pending and it is planned to be completed by the end of 2020[1].

Central section

Central section (BelgradeNiš) is 210 km-long and is completed in 1985.

First section of this part of A1 highway was opened in 1977, and it was 28.1 km long section Beograd (Bubanj Potok) - Umčari, which was opened with another 12.5 kilometers of highway through Belgrade from Mostar interchange to Bubanj Potok. Next year 79.3 kilometers from Umčari to Batočina were opened. Highway was simultaneously constructed from Belgrade and from Niš, so in 1980 21.2 kilometers between Pojate and Deligrad were opened. In 1982 sections Batočina - Ćuprija and Deligrad - Niš were opened, and there was in total 189 kilometers between Belgrade and Niš. Last section was opened in 1985 and it was last 21 kilometers between Ćuprija and Pojate.

Highway goes through hilly terrain southern of Belgrade and then, near Smederevo enters the valley of Great Morava and later South Morava, passes by Jagodina, Ćuprija, Paraćin and Aleksinac and enters a basin near of Niš. Few kilometers after Niš toll station if Trupale interchange with A4 highway which goes north of Niš, then passes Pirot, and goes to border with Bulgaria, while A1 highway goes south by Južna Morava river.

Southern section

Southern section (NišLeskovacVranjeMacedonian border) consists of 120 km that are in service, while additional 34 km are under construction. Construction of southern section is due to be completed by the end of 2018:[2]

Highway passes through valley of South Morava, passes west of Niš, by Merošina and Leskovac, and after Grdelica built highway ends. 26 kilometers of highway under construction passes through Grdelica gorge, very difficult terrain. This sections is often considered the hardest one to build in Serbia. On this part of highway will be 33 bridges, of which Vrla bridge will be longest (around 650 meters long and around 60 high), and two tunnels: "Predejane" (1000 m) and "Manajle" (1818 m) which will be the longest tunnel in Serbia. Near Vladičin Han highways leaves Grdelica gorge and there is beginning of Vladičin Han - Donji Neradovac section. Highway passes by Vranje, and near Bujanovac constructed section ends. Last 8 kilometers of highway under construction passes by Bujanovac and in Levosoje starts last 21 kilometers of A1 highway. Few kilometers south of Preševo is Border Crossing Preševo with FYR Macedonia.

Toll

As are all motorways in Serbia also A1 is tolled.[3] The toll is collected based on the entry and exit toll stations and category of the vehicle.[4] Since December 2017 the prices have increased to 13€ and 82€ respectively. Sections which are tolled or will be after construction are Subotica - Stara Pazova, Belgrade (Vrčin) - Preševo. Now there are two additional toll stations - Niš and Doljevac. Both of them will be removed when construction of remaining sections finishes. Belgrade bypass and short parts next to it will not be tolled.
