Sonepur (Odia: ସୋନପୁର୍ ରାଜ୍ୟ; Hindi: सोनपुर रियासत), also known as Sonpur State,[1] was one of the princely states of India during the period of the British Raj. Its ruler was entitled to a nine gun salute.[2] Formerly it was placed under the Central India Agency, but in 1905 it was transferred to the Eastern States Agency.[3] Its capital was Sonepur, the only significant town in the area. The former state's territory is in the present-day Subarnapur district, Odisha.
History
Sonepur state was founded in 1556. It was ruled by Rajputs belonging to the Chauhan dynasty. The state became a British protectorate on 13 Dec 1826. The ruling family was awarded with the title Raja Bahadur for services rendered to the British during the Sambalpur uprising.[4] The last ruler of this princely state signed the accession to the Indian Union on 1 January 1948.[5]
Rulers
The ancient rulers of Sonepur State bore the title of 'Raja'. The last two had the title of 'Maharaja'.[6]
