Shamli is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This district was carved out from Muzaffarnagar District on 28 September 2011 as Prabudh Nagar and renamed Shamli in July 2012. Shamli is the headquarters of the district. Shamli is located along the DelhiSaharanpur (709B), Meerut-Karnal (709A) and Panipat-Khatima (709AD) Highways. The district lies in the fertile Doab region and hence the major occupation is agriculture. The district is known for its sugar mills and supplies sugar to neighbouring areas. Shamli is a land of farmers but youngsters are also serving in Indian Army. Shamli district comes in National Capital Region of India.[1]

History

In ancient times the area was under Haryana Desh, but due to political and other reasons, the area even though having same culture as of Haryana is in Uttar Pradesh. However strong demand has been arisen to include the district along with Baghpat and Saharanpur in Haryana. Two great leaders, Himanshu Singh Malik (from Shamli) and Rohit Ahlawat (from Rohtak) have taken up this struggle. In May 2018, Rohit addressed a huge public meeting in Meham and Shamli making both sides aware of cultural similarities between The Doab and Haryana. The area was prominent during the first struggle for freedom against the East India Company in 1857, but the British army later recaptured the area. The area also witnessed important wars such as the first, second and third Battles of Panipat, and the battles during the rise of the Sikhs.

The district was also at the centre of the successful Green Revolution that helped India become self-sufficient in food production and gave the country confidence during the years after the end of British occupation.

Formation

The district was carved out of Muzaffarnagar district in September 2011 and named Prabudh Nagar. Shamli and Kairana tehsils of Muzaffarnagar formed the new district. It was renamed Shamli in July 2012 by the Uttar Pradesh government.[2]

2013 Riots

As in many other districts of western Uttar Pradesh, Shamli also suffered rioting during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.[3][4] A May 2015 report in India Today said that Shamli and Muzaffarnagar districts were "considered sensitive" ever since the violent riots of August and September 2013.[5]

The standard of living is high because of several factors, including the rich farmland of the Doab between the Ganges and the Yamuna, the network of sugar mills in the area, and the proximity and easy access to Delhi and other important industrial towns. It is also famous for its steel and paper industry. It is known as an international maker of wheel rims.

Monuments

Hanuman Tilla, one of the most revered temples of West Uttar Pradesh, is located in Shamli. It is believed to have been built by the great warrior Bhima, one of the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata. It is also rumored to have been a place where Lord Krishna had a night halt during his last attempt to avoid Mahabharata and hence was named after him. Another fable describes Shamli as a place where Lord Hanuman rested during his journey to fetch "Sanjivani Booti" from the Himalayas for Laxman. It's also known to be a probable site of resting of priests who accompanied Marathas in the Battle of Panipat.

The temple currently hosts many celebrations through the year on religious occasions and facilitates the yearly Kanwar Yatra.

There are many temples and mosques of reverence in the district.
