Garfa is a southern neighbourhood of Kolkata, India. The postal code of Garfa area is 700075[1] and 700078. This area is surrounded by Haltu, Nandi bagan, Jadavpur and Kalikapur. Garfa is mainly a residential area. Starting as a refugee colony within Jadavpur, the current generation of young people has made it a nice middle-class neighbourhood. Along with the surrounding areas, it has seen a big change in transportation systems and real estate. Lot of new residential flats have come up. Also, several buses serve the Garfa Main Road now. The Garfa Main Road connects the EM Bypass Connector on the east side, and Pal Bazar on the west. Middle Road is the other main road in the neighbourhood.

History

In the 1950s, people like Haranath Chakraborty, Khagen Naskar, Sudangshu Basu, NishiKanta Chakraborty were among the main residents of Garfa. Haranath chakraborty famous freedom fighter got award from central government for his contribution in Indian freedom movement. He was resident at Garfa doctorbagan and he was the first secretary of Garfa Dhirendranath Memorial Boys school. Sudangshu Basu was the headmaster of Jadavpur High School. Nishikanta Chakraborty used to own "Nandir Math" where young children used to play soccer and cricket. Very recently, Bisweswar Bhattacharya, from Pratapgarh, won Padma Shree for his contribution as a director of Bhabha Atomic Research Center.

Police district

Garfa police station is in the South Suburban division of Kolkata Police.[2]

Located at Garfa Deaf and Dumb School Premises, Vivekananda Sarani, Doctor Bagan, Kolkata-700078, it has jurisdiction over the police district, which is bordered on the north starting from the point where the southern limit of Sarat Ghosh Garden Road meets the Eastern limit of railway line, thence eastwards along the southern limit of Sarat Ghosh Garden Road, Haltu Main Road, Kayasthapara Main Road, P. Majumder Road up to Lead Channel C-C-I, thence eastward along the southern limit of Lead Channel C-C-I, up to the point where it meets the eastern limit of Eastern Metropolitan Bye-Pass; on the east, starting from a point where the southern limit Lead Channel C-C-1 meets the eastern limit of Eastern Metropolitan By-Pass, thence southward along the eastern limit of Eastern Metropolitan Bye-Pass up to the point, where it meets the eastern limit of Panchannagram Main Canal, thence proceeds southwards along the eastern limit of Panchannagram Main Canal up to the point, where it meets the southern limit of Kalikapur Road; on the south starting from a point where the eastern limit of Panchannagram Main Canal meets the southern limit of Kalikapur Road, thence westwards along the southern limits of Kalikapur Road, Vivekananda Sarani and Garfa Main Road up to the eastern limit of Jhil Road, thence southwards along the eastern limit of Jhil Road and Jadavpur Station Road up to the eastern limit of the railway line; and on west, by the eastern limit of the railway line up to the point where it meets the southern limit of Sarat Ghosh Garden Road.[2]

Patuli Women police station has jurisdiction over all police districts under the jurisdiction of South Suburban Division i.e. Netaji Nagar, Jadavpur, Kasba, Regent Park, Bansdroni, Garfa and Patuli.[2]

Jadavpur, Thakurpukur, Behala, Purba Jadavpur, Tiljala, Regent Park, Metiabruz, Nadial and Kasba police stations were transferred from South 24 Parganas to Kolkata in 2011. Except Metiabruz, all the police stations were split into two. The new police stations are Parnasree, Haridevpur, Garfa, Patuli, Survey Park, Pragati Maidan, Bansdroni and Rajabagan.[3]

Culture

On the cultural front, Garfa hosts some major Kali Pujas and Durga Pujas of South Kolkata. The Kali Puja organised by Hurumtal club and Safui para Sabuj Sangha is a famous one in this area. Some cultural and sports events are organised every year. There is not any library, shopping mall or multiplex in this area.
