Burtolla (or Bartala) is a neighbourhood of North Kolkata in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Etymology
It was named after the twin banyan (bar or bat in Bengali) that stood there. The Rajas of Sobhabazar had ordered severe punishment for those attempting to damage the trees, and even death for those trying to cut them down.[1]
History
In 1888, one of the 25 newly organized police section houses was located in Burtolla.[1](For more information see Dihi Panchannagram.)

Police district
Burtolla police station is part of the North and North Suburbandivision of Kolkata Police. Located at 1, Raja Rajkrishna Strret, Kolkata-700006, it has jurisdiction over the police district which is bordered on the north by Grey Street, thence by Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road from opposite its junction with Grey Street to its junction with Ultadanga Road, then by Ultadanga Road (north side) from its junction with Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road to its junction with Gouribari Lane; on the east by Gouribari Lane (east side), thence by Nirode Behari Mullick Road (south side) to its junction with Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road. Thence by Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road from its junction with Nirode Behari Mullick Road to its junction with Vivekananda Road; on the south by Vivekananda Road, Maniktala Street, Ramdulal Sircar Street and Ramesh Dutta Street; and on the west by Upper Chitpore Road from its junction with Grey Street to its junction with Ramesh Dutta Street.[2]
Amherst Street Women police station covers all police districts under the jurisdiction of the North and North Suburban division i.e. Amherst Street, Jorabagan, Shyampukur, Cossipore, Chitpur, Sinthi, Burtolla and Tala.[2]
