Bahraich

Bahraich is a city and a municipal board in Bahraich district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Located on the Saryu River, a tributary of the Ghaghara river, Bahraich is 125 kilometres (78 miles) north-east of Lucknow, the state capital. The districts of Barabanki, Gonda, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shravasti and Sitapur share local boundaries with Bahraich. A factor which makes this town important is the international border shared with Nepal.

Geography and climate

It has an average elevation of 126 metres (413 feet). Bahraich has a warm humid subtropical climate with hot summers from April to July. The rainy season is from July to mid-September when Bahraich gets an average rainfall from the south-west monsoon winds, and occasionally frontal rainfall will occur in January. In winter the maximum temperature is around 25 °C (77 °F) and the minimum is in the −1 to 7 °C (30 to 45 °F) range. Fog is quite common from late December to late January. Summers are extremely hot with temperatures rising to the 40 to 47 °C (104 to 117 °F) range, the average highs being in the high of 30s (degree Celsius). Average annual rainfall is 1,900 centimetres (750 inches) (approx).[3]

Demographics

As of 2011 Indian Census, Bahraich had a total population of 186,223, of which 97,653 were males and 88,570 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 24,097. The total number of literates in Bahraich was 119,564, which constituted 64.2% of the population with male literacy of 66.5% and female literacy of 61.7%. The effective literacy rate of 7+ population of Bahraich was 73.7%, of which male literacy rate was 76.4% and female literacy rate was 70.8%. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes population was 9,584 and 170 respectively. Bahraich had 30460 households in 2011.[1]

Politics

Bahraich is divided into two parliamentary constituencies, Bahraich and Kaiserganj. The former is held by Akshaibar Lal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the latter by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, also of the BJP.

State Government Medical college associated with Mahrishi Balark District Hospital, Bahraich serves the residents of bahraich and nearby cities and towns.

Culture

The city has its own sports stadium called Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium; it hosts many sports tournaments every year. The city also has many sports clubs.

Roads

Bahraich is well connected with other districts of Uttar Pradesh. UPSRTC and private operators provide road connectivity to Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Bareilly, Haridwar, Delhi, Jaipur Balrampur, Gonda, Barabanki, Pratapgarh, Shimla, Mathura, Jhansi, Jaunpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Shravasti and Agra. There are buses for Lucknow in every 15 minutes. National Highway 927 (India) connects the city to Barabanki and state capital Lucknow.

|Metre gauge rail in bahraich]] Along with the main railway station, there are all total 13 more stations which lies within the boundaries of bahraich.Bahraich railway station is the main railway station in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh. Its code is BRK. It serves to the residents of Bahraich city. The station consists of 3 platforms, two for broad gauge(Bahraich to Gonda) and one for meter gauge (Bahraich to Nanpara - Mailani). Currently 3 pairs of DEMU trains are running between Gonda to Bahraich. Also the Ministry of railways has decided to lay a line between Bahraich and Khalilabad via shravasti, whose budget is already sanctioned. This project is expected to be cmpleted in 2025. Bahraich to Jarwal Road is a Broad gauge station 55 kilometers (34 miles) from district headquarters and lies on Delhi–Barauni line.[6]

Bahraich has an All India Radio Relay station known as Akashvani Bahraich. It broadcasts on FM frequencies @ 100.1 .

Notable people
  • Thakur Hukum Singh Visen - Former Cabinet Minister of UP for nearly three decades. Served with Govind Ballabh Pant, Sampurnanand, Sucheta Kriplani, Chandra Bhan Gupta etc. He was No 2 in the cabinet. Served as Revenue, Health, Agriculture, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, amongst the more important ministries during his political term. Established High School, Inter College, District Civil Hospital, Largest Dam etc. which are all named after him. He also served as the leader of the house of Uttar Pradesh upper assembly. Born in 1892 to Thakur Sabha Singh, the Zamindar of Lador (Kaiserganj). He served as a minister and deputy to GB Pant in the very first Congress Govt formed in 1937.
