Tulsipur is a settlement in the Dang district of Nepal.

Geography

Tulsipur is located near the India-Nepal border on the banks of the River Nakti (also known as River Siria) and is 23 km from Koilabas. 190 km from Lucknow, which is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. It is located 28 km from the Utraula District.[1] It has an average elevation of 109 metres (357 feet) above sea level.

The nearest domestic airport is Shravasti Airport (45 km) and the nearest international airport is Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (200 km) in Lucknow.

History

The House of Tulsipur ruled one of the largest Taluqs of Oudh, India, which then included the Dang and Deukhuri Valleys. Therefore, it also counted as one of the Baise Rajya (Nepali: बाइसे राज्य; 22 Principalities), a confederation in what became western Nepal. The town shares its name with another Tulsipur in Dang Deukhuri District, Nepal (c.65k North); the two towns are linked historically by having the same ruler.

Demographics

As of the 2011 India census report, the town has a population of 24,488 people, of which 52.5% are male and 47.5% female. 15.1% of the population are children under the age of 6, and the literacy rate is 68.6% (versus the state average of 67.7%). The male literacy is significantly higher, at an average of 74.9%, while that of women is 61.5%, which may be due to past customs of not educating females. Today, this is changing.

Tulispur is split into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. Tulsipur's 'Nagar panchayat' council has governance over 3,776 houses and is responsible for providing basic amenities, such as access to clean water and sewage services. It is additionally authorized to build roads within the town and impose taxes on the properties within its jurisdiction.
