Vehicle registration plates of Missouri

Current Missouri license plate

The U.S. state of Missouri first required its residents to register their motor vehicles in 1907. Registrants had to provide their own license plates for display until 1911, when the state began to supply plates.[1]

Front and rear plates are required on all vehicles except for motorcycles. Until its closure in 2004, all plates were manufactured at the Missouri State Penitentiary.

In 1956, the U.S. states and Canadian provinces came to an agreement with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Automobile Manufacturers Association and the National Safety Council that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles (except those for motorcycles) at 6 inches (15 cm) in height by 12 inches (30 cm) in width, with standardized mounting holes.[2] The 1955 (dated 1956) issue was the first Missouri license plate that complied with these standards.

Month coding

The current base, first issued in June 2008, features serials coded by the month of the registration's expiration. The first letter of the serial constitutes this code. Once all available combinations beginning with the first letter assigned to that month are issued, a second code letter may be used for that month.
