- Electricity would be introduced in the hamlets of Bangaeira and Portela in Chã das Caldeiras on Fogo, one of the last parts of the island not receiving electricity due to the 2014-15 eruption
- Quercus, a Portuguese NGO opened its Cape Verdean branch in Praia
- January 20: Tarrafal Museum in Santiago Island reopened by Prime Minister José Maria Neves and the Portuguese Premier António Costa[1]
- March 20: the 2016 parliamentary election took place
- April 20: Jorge Pedro Mauricio dos Santos becomes president of the National Assembly
- April 22: Ulisses Correia e Silva becomes Prime Minister of Cape Verde
- June Prime Minister Correia e Silva and Finance Minister Olavo Correia met with representatives from the International Monetary Fund to discuss the country's economy.
- June 22: The current Correia e Silva cabinet begins
- September: The Prime Minister and members of his government met with the IMF to discuss the 2016 Article IV consultation.
- September 1: An annular solar eclipse took place after sunrise at around 6:15, it showed at around 25-40% obscuration of the sun in the archipelago[2]

- January 13: First Santo Antão Cup took place featuring all clubs from the two zones, the two zone's cup competition also competes with a single island cup.
- January 16 - the 2015-16 regional leagues of Boa Vista, Santo Antão North Zone and São Nicolau season begins
- January 17 - the 2015-16 São Vicente Island League season begins
- January 23 - the 2015-16 Maio Island League season begins
- February 6 - 2015-16 Sal Island League season begins with two additional clubs totalling eight[5]

- Sport Sal Rei Club won their ninth title for Boa Vista, their next in five years
- Salamansa FC won their first and only cup title for São Vicente[9]
- May 7 - SC Atlético won their seventh title for São Nicolau and qualified into the national championships
- May 8 - All qualifiers into the national championship listed[10] including Académico do Aeroporto, winner of Sal, Desportivo da Praia won their regional title in 26 years, the first as the divided Santiago South Zone, Desportivo returned in four years, their last entry was a second place club as the 2013 island champion Sporting was also national champion in 2012, Varandinha, champion of Santiago North competed for the first time[11] and Académico 83 of Maio
- May 14 - The 2016 National Championships begun
- June 12 - Regular season ended
- June 18 - Playoffs began
- July 9 - Mindelense claimed a record twelfth title and won four consecutive titles, the last club who won four consecutive national titles was Sporting Praia.
- October 8: Mindelense won their super cup for São Vicente
- October 15: Mindelense won their first ever Champion's Cup for São Vicente
- October 29:
- Académica do Porto Novo won their super cup title for Santo Antão South
- Onze Estrelas won their super cup for Boa Vista, the first that the goals were awarded as Sal Rei fielded an ineligible player
- CD Sinagoga won their only super cup title for Santo Antão North
- November 4: the 2016-17 Santiago Island South Zone First Division begins
- November 6: Académica do Porto Novo won their second super cup title for Santo Antão
