- February 18: Cape Verdean presidential election took place
- April 4: A Total lunar eclipse took place and was mainly visible, it occurred in the second half of the evening hours and nearly the first half of the late night hours[1]
- July: Cabopress (now Inforpress) becomes one of the founding members of Aliança das Agências de Informação de Língua Portuguesa (ALP), Alliance of Portuguese-speaking News Agencies<ref></ref
- October: the Country code top-level domain .cv was introduced
- October 21: CFN became ISECMAR, it is now known as the Faculties of Science and Technology and Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts which is part of the University of Cape Verde
- December 23: the SNE (Serviço Nacional de Estatística) became the Instituto Nacional de Estatística

- The 2nd Mindelo Theatrical Festival took place
- Germano Almeida's short story book Tales from the House (Estórias de dentro de casa) released
- Lura's album Nha Vida released, it was later released in Cape Verde
- Vasco Martins' album Island of the Secret Sounds released
- Tito Paris's album Graça De Tchega released, it was later released in Cape Verde
- Mindelact theatrical association of Mindelo established, its first head president was João Branco
- "Hino de Brava" ("Hymn of Brava"), a morna by Eugénio Tavares appeared, later it became the island's anthem
- March/April: he 4th Praia da Gamboa music festival took place
- August: The 12th Baía das Gatas Music Festival took place
