- Monte Graciosa on Santiago became a protected area
- February 24:
- Monte Gordo Natural Park on São Nicolau established
- Serra da Malagueta Natural Park on Santiago established, the first national park created on the island

- December 9: the Barlavento Islands consisting of Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista split from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde (also as Cape Verde) and became the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mindelo
