- Another restoration works for Fort Real de São Filipe in Cidade Velha was done
- The Bank of Cape Verde issued 2000 and 5000 escudo bank notes[1]
- End of salt production in the island of Sal after the last mines in Pedra de Lume shut down
- Mindelo became twinned with Mafra, Portugal also twinned with Mindelo since 1999[2]
- National Library of Cape Verde first opened in Praia
- July: Banco Inter-Atlântico opened its headquarters in Praia
- 7 August: A domestic TACV Flight 5002 from São Pedro Airport to Agostinho Neto Airport crashed into a mountain on Santo Antão island at an altitude of 1370 metres, killing the 16 passengers and 2 crew members on board.[3]

- Santiago North Zone held its first edition - no club would be allowed into the national championships until 2003.
- Santiago South Zone football (soccer) competitions were not held
- January/February: Continuation of full competition of the Santo Antão Island League.
- July 19: FC Praia Branca football (soccer) club of São Nicolau Island established
- Summer: GD Amarantes won their only title since independence for the Cape Verdean Football Championships season[4]
