- The Assomada-Tarrafal Route (LBRS-1, now the EN1-ST01) was rerouted from Figueira das Naus and Ribeira da Prata with its difficult curves to Serra Malagueta and Achada Longueira[1]
- Pedra Badejo of the island of Santiago became twinned with Leibnitz, Austria
- SAA used the airport as a refueling stop for its Boeing 747SP service between South Africa and Houston Intercontinental Airport in the US
- TACV Cabo Verde Airlines became a public (state-owned) company
- October: President Aristides Pereira headed to the United States for his state visit and visited Andrews AFB in Maryland near Washington, D.C., then returned
- December 4: an annular solar eclipse took place in the island of Brava and occurred between 10:20 and 10:25 during the morning hours, it was about 95%-98% in other parts of the archipelago, the eclipse started it around 8:00
