  • Sal Rei Perimeter Road opened in the island of Boa Vista
  • February 16: University of Santiago opened in Assomada, Santiago Island, it would become Cape Verde's second university
  • March 26-27: Éric Besson, French Minister of Immigration visited Praia, he examined the projects of solidary development, he met José Brito and the president Pedro Pires
  • April: A symposium on the former Tarrafal Camp took place at Praia in the island of Santiago on the 35th anniversary of its closing
  • Early-May,The Porto Novo-Janela Road forming a part of what became the Ribeira Grande-Paul-Porto Novo Road or the East Island (Estrada Litoral) Road running through the island's easternmost point completed
  • May 10: Nossa Senhora de Fátima (Our Lady of Fatima) church in Milho Branco, Santiago started building

  • August 14: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Cape Verde, the last of her African visits and met with Prime Minister Neves
  • September 6 and 8: French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a technical stop over the island of Sal on his way from France to Brazil
  • September 7: Tropical Depression formed, later it would be Hurricane Fred, the system was located roughly 160 mi (260 km) south of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands.[3]Several hours before being declared a tropical depression, the precursor to Fred produced moderate rainfall and gusty winds across the southern Cape Verde Islands, in the city of Praia, Cape Verde, only a trace of rain, less than 2.5 mm fell on September 7 and sustained winds reached 35 km/h.[4]
  • September 8:
    • French President Nicolas Sarkozy made another technical stop on his way back to France from Brazil
    • Increased winds and heavy rains from the tropical depression led to the cancellation of two flights and several others were delayed.[5]
    • The tropical depression became Tropical Storm Fred, later it became Hurricane Fred and moved west of Cape Verde
  • December 22: São Pedro Airport (now Cesária Évora Airport became an international airport, it was the fourth after Boavista's and Sotavento's recent, it was opened by the Prime Minister and president of São Vicente Isaura Gomes.
