- A species of cancerwort flowers, Kickxia webbiana, native to western Barlavento were described by Per Øgle Sunding
- Rádio Barlavento started radio broadcasting, it was Cape Verde's first radio station
- April 25: the Carnation Revolution took place in Portugal, the Estado Novo regime collapsed, Cape Verde became an autonomous province
- April 26: In the evening, all prisoners from the Tarrafal Camp were released
- June 4: A Partial lunar eclipse took place and was mainly visible, it occurred for most of the during the evening and during midnight[1]
- Summer: Rádio Barlavento went off the air, it was replaced by Radio Voz de Sao Vicente
- August 6: Henrique da Silva Horta became the 111th governor of Cape Verde
- September 21: Vicente Almeida d'Eça became the 112th and last governor of Cape Verde
- September 24: African Youth Amílcar Cabral founded, since 1991, it is now the Youth of PAICV
- October 13: Pedro Pires returned to Praia after being exiled
- December 30: Vicente Almeida d'Eça became the only high commissioner of Cape Verde

- Spring:
- GS Castilho won their second and recent island championships for São Vicente
- CD Travadores won their island championships for Santiago
- Spring/Summer: CD Travadores was the final club to win a colonial title for the Cape Verdean Football Championships[2]
