- Red Cross of Cape Verde opened with its headquarters in Praia
- Salt mining and production ceased in Santa Maria
- February 17: ASA-Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea, the national airport authority founded with its offices in Espargos on the island of Sal
- May 30: An annular solar eclipse took place, it showed from above 30% (at Brava) to about 40% (at Sal) obscuration of the sun in the archipelago after 17:30 (5:30 PM)[1]

- August: Festival de Baía das Gatas, Cape Verde's first major music festival held its first edition in the island of São Vicente, also the village was probably founded

- Brava Island League founded
- Tchadense football (soccer) club founded in the neighborhood of Achada Santo António, Praia
- February 4: FC Esperança football (soccer) club established in the island of Santo Antão, in 1996, they would be known as Os Sanjoanenses, after the patron saint of Porto Novo
- Spring/Summer: FC Derby won their first national championship title[2]
