The 2017 football championship final was Mindelense's was their fourteenth and recent appearance in their 97 year history and also their fourth consecutive and Académica do Porto Novo was their second appearance in their 32 year history.

Unlike the 2008 season which ended the finals in an away goals rule, the 2016 final was the second straight that the finals ended in both extra time and with a penalty shootout and the first with two legs, this was the only time it ever happened in Cape Verde.
