The 2016–17 Maio Island League season was the 26th of the competition of the football competition in the island of Maio, Cape Verde and the second of the second and third tier football competitions.[1] Its started on January 14 and finished on April 23, 2017. The tournament was organized by the Maio Regional Football Association (Associação Regional do Maio de Futebol, ARMF).[2] All matches were played at Estádio 20 de Janeiro. Onze Unidos won their 10th title and finished with 25 points. Onze Unidos also qualified for both the regional Super Cup and the second Champion's Cup. Not one of the original seven, Real Marítimo was the second club to be relegated and the first of the clubs registered after 2009 to do so.

Académico 83 was once again the defending team of the title. Again, a total of 7 clubs participated in the competition and still each club had a bye week per round. Barreirense and Beira-Mar returned to the competition in the season.[3] It was the second season that the Second Division was added and five new clubs came to that division including Beira-Mar, Cruzeiro, Figueirense and Miramar, it also featured a new club Santa Clara from Alcatraz-Pilão Cao would compete in the regionals for the first time, the first of five listed Beira-Mar withdrew and did not participate due to financial and material reasons and reduced it to four and each club challenged three times. Beira-Mar was also the first ever club to be relegated last season. In the following season, a promotional match will be added, it will feature second placed Santana and second placed Cruzeiro. Miramar won the Second Division title and will become the ninth club to compete in the following season of the Premier Division.

The Second Division started a day before the Premier Division on January 13 and finished on March 18.

Overview

A total of 106 goals were scored, around one fifth less than the previous season. It was the next season that not a single match of a round was rescheduled to another date.

The biggest win was Onze Unidos who defeated last placed Real Marítimo on April 18, two rounds before the end of the season and was their biggest home win. Académico 83's 2-4 score over Santana was the biggest match away.

Académico 83 who defeated Barreirense 1-7 on May 7 in the 14th and final round of the season. The biggest home win was Académica Calheta do Maio who defeated Santana 6-0 on January 31 in the third round. Barreirense conceded 36 goals.

Onze Unidos took the number one spot almost the whole season, Académica Calheta had it at the 5th round in February

Onze Unidos scored the most number of goals of the season numbering 23, second was Barreirense with 19, third was 17 shared with three clubs, Académico 83, Académica da Calheta and Morrerense. The least was nine goals shared by Santana and Real Marítimo. On the opposites, Onze Unidos conceded the least with six, second was Académico 83 with nine. The second most goals conceded was Santana with 21 and Real Marítimo with 32.

There were no competitions in the first week of March due to the regional cup competitions. Other regional cup competitions took place within the regional championships, the final match is after the end of the regional championships.
