The 2016–17 Sporting Clube da Praia season were in the island division of football (soccer).^[1][2] The club won the island's 9th regional and later the 10th national title, their next in five years.^[1]

The club scored a total of 58 goals. Of which 43 was scored in the Santiago South Premier Division and 15 in the national championships, 7 in the regular season and 4 in the playoffs. Their total points was 69, of which 53 in the island and 14 in the national championships.

Santiago Island League (South)

The 2016-17 season would have a good start starting second place. Their first match was on November 5, the first held in the earliest part of November. The club defeated Eugénio Lima 0-2 a club formerly known as Lapaloma, their second goal was scored at the first minute of the second stoppage time. Sporting Praia later had a draw with Académica 1-1 a week later and the club was third.^[3] The following matches were won by the club, Sporting regained second place after defeating Benfica Praia on November 18, their first meeting.^[4] Nigeria's Mbutidem Sunday was the South Zone's leading scorer with 5 and later 6 goals in mid-January and held it up to the last days of the month where Travadores' António Paiva Tavares tied it then surpassed it with seven. A goal draw was made with Vitória on December 4.^[5] Sporting made a seven match winning streak, a success not done in three seasons, the 2013-14 season, the club defeated Os Garridos,^[6] Travadores, ADESBA on January 6, 5-0 which became the highest scoring match for Sporting for less than two months, later it became the second for the club and Sporting became first place for the rest of the season, Celtic 0-1 on a rescheduled match, originally for January 13, played on the last day of January, Desportivo, Boavista and lastly Tchadense, from the 11th to the 17th rounds, Sporting made a six match unbeaten streak without conceding a goal. At the 11th round, Mbutidem Sunday was once more the highest scorer for Santiago South with 8 goals. Two scoreless draws were made, first to Eugénio Lima on February 11 and then to Académica on February 17 and Travadores' goal total became third with 22 and put Sporting fourth with 20 goals scored, António Paiva Tavares of Travadores took back the success and Anilton from Boavista became the highest goal scorers of the region numbering eight for the next two rounds. Sporting is still the one as they made a seven match winning streak, first over Benfica 0-1 on February 24, in goal scoring they were fourth with 21 goals scored behind Travadores, third behind Boavista and ahead of Bairro. Later on March 5, then they defeated the weak Vitória 7-0, Sporting's next seven match goal in ten months (the last was at end of the previous season) and made Sporting's highest scoring match of the season and second in the regionals behind Boavista's eight goal win, for the fourth time, Mbutidem Sunday was the region's highest scorer and totalled to 28 goals, three behind Boavista's and a goal ahead of Desportivo, Mbutidem Sunday for a week alone and Euclides Mendonça scored two each. The club's third consecutive win came on March 10 and defeated the ailing Garridos 1-0, Sporting's goal totals was third again behind Desportivo's and ahead of Travadores, the region's highest goal totals by player is now shared with Boavista's Anilton once more and continued into the 17th round with eleven goals, also that time, Sporting's unbeaten record succeeded the 28 unbeaten record which lasted from February 18, 2012 until November 16, 2013. A week later, Sporting defeated Travadores 4-3 and the club again conceded goals in a few championship matches and their goal totals is now 33 goals overall sharing the total with Desportivo's which is second in the region behind Boavista and continues into the 18th round but with 35, also Sporting made their fifth consecutive win after defeating Bairro 0-2, all two goals were scored by Nigerian Mbutidem Sunday and totalled 46 points, matched it with last season's overall point total and their best win equalled to theirs in 2008 and 2014, as Boavista also won the 18th round match, the club is not inside the championship/qualification zone. Mbutidem Sunday repeatedly became the sole highest scorer in Santiago South for one week, ahead of Travadores's Paiva Tavares and beat Boavista Praia's Anilton by two goals. The club made then their sixth straight over Celtic 3-0 on March 31 and tied the season's win totals to that of 2012 and 2013, Mbutidem Sunday was one of the scorers and now totals 14, but Paiva Tavares made a tie in the most goals scored by played in the region, also it matched António Correia's total last season, their totals continued into the 20th round. As Boavista also won the 19th round match, Sporting Praia was not inside the championship zone yet, in total points, it finally approach the club record number of 49 made second after 2005. Another seven match winning streak was made on April 7 again in the season after a won over Desportivo 0-1 and seven points ahead of Boavista, Sporting claimed their 10th title for the South Zone (9th after the breakup in 2003, 20+ overall),^[7] two rounds before the end of the season and got their qualification into the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships which were in the same group as another Sporting affiliate from Brava, Group C. Also Sporting Praia achieved qualification into the upcoming 2017 Santiago South Super Cup. Up to that time, the club only had wins and draws.

On April 21, Sporting's planned achievement of 58 points vanished along with their eighth straight win and a ten point difference after Sporting, the last club got their only loss of the season, the club lost to Boavista 1-3, Euclides Mendonça was its only scorer. Also Sporting's regional goal totals became third behind Desportivo, the totals reached 40. So far, Sporting made a 33 match unbeaten streak up to 20th round, of any island leagues, it is one behind CS Mindelense (34 matches) which occurred between 2014-2016 and Sporting Praia's from 2004-2006. Also Sporting's goals totals being the regions highest were now shared with Boavista's Anilton, one of three. 3-1 was the result of the club's final match of the regional season as they defeated Tchadense on April 29. Mbutidem Sunday scored nothing and his totals became fourth and were surpassed by Paiva Tavares (Travadores) and Anilton (Boavista) with 15 and Ró of Desportivo with 16 goals.

The club finished with 55 points, a new regional record was made which exceeded their total made in 2005 and any on the island of Fogo, the highest being Botafogo, of any top flight regional competitions, a four point difference with Boavista, it is second behind Santiago North Zone's Varandinha of 63 and Scorpion Vermelho of 61 With 17 wins and 4 draws, further wins and/or draws, it exceeded the matches to that of 2005 and it became the best season ever for the club at around the 20th round. This record stood for 11 months On March 22, 2018, it was surpassed by Académica da Praia with 56 and their maximum is three more. Sporting's season record is now second.

Also Sporting has a 23 match unbeaten streak away at the regionals and surpassed that of São Vicente's, Mindelense's 18 match unbeaten streak at home and six more away which lasted from 2014 to 2016, that record continues. Overall, it is behind Académica Porto Novo's record of 30 which was from 2012 to April 2016. Sporting's unbeaten streak away did not vanish until November 19 when they lost to Académica Praia and totald 24.

Overall, only 20 goals were scored up to the 20th round, the majority were scored after. The majority of the goals were home goals with 27 over 16 away goals, of the 10 goals conceded, 7 were at home while 3 were away.

Santiago South Zone Cup

Sporting Praia's first cup match was on November 26 and defeated Unidos do Norte 0-3. A month later on December 30, they challenged against Varanda and as the stadium lights were not working, the match was abandoned at the 88th minute. On New Year's Eve 2016, Varanda did not showed up to play the remaining two minutes and some stoppage time, Sporting won the second cup match, they were awarded 3-0, but some, the 1-0 result could have been stood. Originally for January 18, more than a month later on February 21, Sporting defeated Eugénio Lima 2-1, a club once known as Lapaloma. Sporting defeated a Cidade Velha team, Ribeira Grande de Santiago on April 13, 0-1, and Sporing advanced up to the finals. Sporting Praia does not qualify as cup winner as already having been qualified as champions on April 9. Sporting made their next final appearance in three years and faced Os Garridos on May 6/7 at Estádio da Várzea, the match ended in a goal draw and in the penalty shootout, Sporting won 5-3 over Os Garridos in the penalty shootouts and claimed their next cup title in three years.

Santiago South Zone Super Cup

On April 9, Sporting Praia won the regional championship and will qualify into the next super cup in four years, as the match three years ago was cancelled and then unheld. Garridos defeated Celtic Praia on April 12 and headed to the regional cup finals, after Sporting defeated Ribeira Grande and qualified into the cup finals, with status not yet determined as the cup final will be on May 19, Os Garridos got their qualification into the super cup competition for the first time in the South Zone. The Super Cup took place in October 28 and defeated Os Garridos 2-0.

Cape Verdean Football Championships

On April 7, Sporting Praia became entrant into the national championships after three years and the first of four.^[1][2] Other three clubs in the group as of April 23 will be Sport Sal Rei Club, Boa Vista champion, another Sporting affiliate from Brava (Sporting Clube da Brava) and runner up of São Vicente FC Derby.

Sporting Praia and Derby are likely to be one of two successful clubs of the group and could advance into the playoffs. The probability that the best club in the playoffs could probably have a chance to compete into the CAF Champions League in the following season, as the Malian Premier Division was abandoned, there was a possibility of another entrant from Cape Verde or Senegal, as Malian competitions in football resumed. Only one participant may come from Cape Verde and it became Sporting Praia.

Sporting challenged against FC Derby as its first match in Mindelo de São Vicente on May 13 and defeated that club 1-0. The next three matches were at Várzea, the first one was their second straight win over Sal Rei 3-0 and became the nation's highest match of the season. Then, the first of two matches featuring the two Sporting affiliates of Sovatento occurred, Sporting Praia prevented Sporting Brava from getting their record 9 national points as they defeated that club 1-0, then the third was a goal draw with Derby in their last challenge and being the first who challenged twice at the nationals. Another victory was made over Sal Rei at Arsénio Ramos and threw that club out of knockout participation. Sporting had the most points at the nationals tying their 2014 point totals at the regular season. With 13 points, a four point difference over Sporting Brava's nine meant Sporting Praia became the first of four participants into the knockout stage. The last match of the season was another Sporting match in Brava which ended in a scoreless draw and Sporting Praia finished first in the group with 14 points which became second behind their 2002 totals, the most in the nation. A total of eight goals were scored which was ranked fifth.

Team kit

Its home uniform is a white t-shirt with four thick green stripes, black shorts and white socks with three green stripes, the same to Sporting Lisbon's uniform color used for home matches. Its away uniform is black clothing with a t-shirt with three thick grey stripes. From September 2014 to February 2017, its away uniform was a white t-shirt with green sleeves.
