The 2016–17 Académico do Aeroporto season were in the island division of football (soccer) and third of the Premier Division. The club won their 14th championship title and also their third straight and qualified into the 2017 National Championships in May.[1]

On December 1, the club celebrated its 50th year of foundation.[2]

Sal Island Premier Division

All of its matches took place in 2017.[1] Their first match was a win over Palmeira and started third. The club suffered a loss to Juventude and was fourth. Later, Académico do Aeroporto defeated Gaviões in their first ever participation with that club and their positions was placed second. Académico Aeroporto suffered another loss to Santa Maria on February 4 and was 4th placed. A four match winning streak occurred, first they defeated Académica do Sal in the Airport Derby and their positions climbed back to second where they remained up to the 12th round. After defeating three more, Florença, Verdun and Palmeira, they had their season's final loss to Juventude on March 26. Another win in their second participation with Gaviões on April 1 and defeated that club 4-1, one of two that was the club's highest for the season. A two goal draw with Santa Maria came after that. The Airport Derby came and another victory was made and Académico do Aeroporto's result became first place for the last few rounds. They made two more wins, the first was another club's highest match for the season where they defeated Florença Santa Maria 0-4. Their final match of the season knocked out Verdun Pedra de Lume from further participation in the regional Premier Division. Their home-away wins were 50/50, out of 29 goals, 16 were scored at home but much of its 12 goals were conceded at home totalling ten.

Cape Verdean National Championships

The club competed for the 14th time at the national championships. The two group system was replaced with the three group system featuring four clubs each and now has two meetings per club. Académico do Aeroporto is currently in Group B.

Not a single win was made but made two draws. The first two matches were a goal draw first with Académica do Porto Novo then with Paulense, both from the two zones of Santo Antão. Two losses the club now suffered, first a 2-0 loss to Mindelense on 27 May then a 1-3 loss to Académica do Porto Novo. At the end of the 4th round, the club was listed as a non-participant in the final stage as being last in Group B. Another win was made over Paulense defeating that club 1-3 where they scored their last national goal and became third in the group but both clubs were eliminated from the playoff stage. Also 6/8 goals were conceded away while 4/6 goals were scored away, it equalled away with scored and conceded goals. The final round was a loss to almighty Mindelense with the score 0-2 and 8/10 goals were conceded away. The club was out of competition.

On November 2016, Carlos Moniz became president of the club. Lúcio Antunes became continued to be coach of the club but in late October, it was vacant. On May 2017, Nelito became coach for Académico do Aeroporto
