Ratna Sugar Mill, the first sugar mill of the Purvanchal region was located in Shahganj, which is closed now (due to recurring losses).

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[2] Shahganj had a population of 26,656. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shahganj has an average literacy rate of 59%, Lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 61%, and female literacy is 57%.

Fairs and festivals

Shahganj is famous for its Sita Sringar Mela which is a Bangle fair. Traders from different regions of the Purvanchal come for business in this fair.[3]
