Chong Chieng Jen (simplified Chinese: 张健仁; traditional Chinese: 張健仁; pinyin: Zhāng jiànrén; born 12 February 1971), is a Malaysian lawyer and politician from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) currently serving as the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs of Malaysia. He owns a legal firm named Chong Brothers Advocates. He is currently the Member of Parliament of Malaysia for Stampin seat and the member of the Sarawak State Assembly for Kota Sentosa. He was previously Member of Parliament for the Bandar Kuching seat from 2004 to 2018. He is also the Vice-Chairman of DAP Malaysia,[1] the Chairman of DAP Sarawak,[2] DAP Socialist Advisor of Youth Sarawak & Kuching, DAP Kuching Branch chairman and Life member of DAP since 1998.[3]

Personal life and education

He started his primary education in SJK Methodist, Sibu. He continued his education from Primary 3 to 5 at Kuching's Chung Hua Primary School No.3, and Primary 6 at SRK St. Theresa Padungan, Kuching. He continued his secondary education in SMK St. Joseph, Kuching and Saint Patrick's School, Singapore. He was admitted into Victoria Junior College, one of the top junior colleges in Singapore. He pursued his tertiary studies at the Australian National University, Canberra and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Economics) and Bachelor of Laws.[3]

Political career

He first took part in 1999 parliamentary election for Bandar Kuching as a DAP candidate but lost to SUPP candidate, Datuk Song Swee Guan.[4][5] In the following 2001 Pandungan state election, again, he lost to Lily Yong, a SUPP candidate.[6] However, he was elected as Democratic Action Party (DAP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bandar Kuching in 2004 with a 2,041 majority vote,[7] Sarawak state assemblyman for newly created seat of Kota Sentosa in 2006[8][9] and defended his parliamentary seat in 2008 with a bigger majority.[10] Once again, he defended his state assembly seat from Yap Chin Loi with a majority vote of 4,824 in 2011.

On 17 December 2012, during the DAP 16th National Congress, Chong is among the seven DAP leaders appointed to the Central Executive Committee (CEC).[11]

On 5 May 2013, he contested for the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat for the final time in the 13th Malaysian general election and retained the seat with an even larger majority of 19,642 against Tan Kai.[12]

On 7 May 2016, during the 11th Sarawak state election, Chong retained his Kota Sentosa state seat with a majority vote of 2,819 against Yap Yau Sin.[13]

On 12 November 2017, during the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) re-election, Chong was re-elected as one of five national vice-chairmen.[14][15]

Following then-incumbent Julian Tan Kok Ping's decision to retire from politics[16], Chong moved to contest the Stampin parliamentary seat against SUPP President Sim Kui Hian in the 14th Malaysian general election on 9 May 2018, which was seen as a 'grey' or unsafe seat following redelineation by the Election Commission of Malaysia.[17] His special adviser Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen contested for Bandar Kuching seat.[18] Chong went on to win with a majority vote of 14,221.[19][20][21]

On 2 July 2018, Chong was sworn-in as the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.[22]
