Kanpur Metro is a proposed rail based mass transit system in the city of Kanpur, India which shall further be extendable to Kanpur Metropolitan Area. The feasibility study of the project was done by RITES and was completed in June 2015. Kanpur. The feasibility study of metro rail in Kanpur has been prepared to control the traffic woes and congestion which are hampering the growth, development and prosperity of the City.

Cost

The Cost of construction is estimated at ₹13,721 crores for two lines. Line I is projected to be developed with ₹9000 crores. The cost will be evaluated based on the June 2015 price index.[1]

Status updates

  • Sept 2015: Proposed formation of Kanpur Metro Rail Corporation[2]
  • Nov 2015: DPR prepared by LMRC and RITES is submitted to state government.[3]
  • Feb 2016: State Government is planning to lay foundation stone of Kanpur Metro in March 2016 after state cabinet approval.[4]
  • Feb 2016: It is expected that civil work on Kanpur metro will start by Dec 2016.[5]
  • Mar 2016: UP Govt approves the DPR.[6]

  • 20 July 2016: Scheduled inauguration of Kanpur Metro by Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh which could not take place due to delay in giving NOCs various ministries under Central Government.[11]
  • October 2016: Final approval of Metro project by UP Government and Government of India[12]
  • 4 October 2016: Foundation stone-laying ceremony done by Urban Development minister Venkaiah Naidu in the presence of CM Akhilesh Yadav and BJP MP Murli Manohar Joshi at Brijendra Swarup Park in Benajhabar.[13]
  • July 2017: Civil work started.[14]
  • September 2017: Civil engineering work comes to a halt. Central Govt has asked Kanpur Metro to rework DPR and finances and asked to make it a PPP (Public Private Partneship) model project.[15]
  • October 2017: Work on preparing new DPR started. New DPR report to take approximately three months.[16]
  • January 2018: UP Government Cabinet decides to build metro in Kanpur, Agra and Meerut.[17]
  • Feb 2018: Work started at metro yard. Tenders floated and which are to be opened in March 2018.[18]
  • Apr 2018: Center yet to approve of Kanpur Metro project.[19]
  • Jun 2018: Tendering done but not awarded as project with new DPR is yet not approved by central government.[20]
  • Jun 2018: Finance ministry gave its in principle approval to Kanpur metro along with Agra, Meerut, Indore and Bhopal.
  • Sep 2018: Detailed Project Report (DPR) sent by UP Government to Central government.[21]
