Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (Delhi–Meerut RRTS) is an 82 km long,[2][3] under-development, semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. It is one of the three rapid-rail corridors planned under Phase-I of Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). With maximum speed of 160 km/h (99.42 mph), the distance between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in around 62 min (1.03 h).[4] The project will cost ₹21,902 crore (US$3.1 billion) and is expected to start operations by 2024.[3]
History
Government of Uttar Pradesh approved Delhi-Meerut RRTS on 19 May 2017. It approved the DPR and the proposed project.[5][6] The estimated 82 km long Delhi-Meerut Corridor would be passing through one of the most densely populated sections of the National Capital Region connecting Delhi to Uttar Pradesh.
Introduction
The corridor would be beneficial for the development of the region and help connect the large number of townships and centres of economic activity that are already planned along this corridor.
Length = 82 km
Number of RRTS Stations =16
Number of additional Stations for Meerut MRTS = 6
Route
Of the entire length, 60.35 km (37.50 mi) is elevated, 30.25 km (18.80 mi) is underground[2] and 1.45 km (0.90 mi) will be at grade for connections to two depots that will come up at Duhai, Ghaziabad and Modipuram, Meerut. In densely populated areas of Delhi and Meerut, the route will be underground, including that of the river Yamuna.[3] The entire route is designed for a maximum speed of 180 km/h (111.85 mph) and the operating speed will be 160 km/h (99.42 mph).[7][8] Average speed (including all the stops) will come around 100 km/h (62.14 mph).[8]
The Delhi-Meerut corridor starts from Sarai Kale Khan station in Delhi. The corridor will pass through areas of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut, terminating at Modipuram in Meerut.[2][3]
Sarai Kale Khan will also become a transit hub with the presence of an Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in vicinity.[3]
The 38.05 km (23.64 mi) long Sahibabad - Meerut South section, including Duhai Depot, is expected to become operational by January 2023, the 16.60 km (10.31 mi) Sarai Kale Khan - Sahibabad in January 2024 and the remaining 37.40 km (23.24 mi) Meerut South - Modipuram in July 2024.[3]
There will be a total of 16 stations [9]
