The Agra Metro is a proposed Mass Rapid Transit System in the city of Agra, India. The feasibility study of the project was completed by RITES in June 2015. Agra Metro Rail is likely to be completed around 2020 (phase 1), if started in 2016. Agra is the 4th largest city in Uttar Pradesh. The feasibility study of metro rail in Agra has been prepared to control the traffic woes and congestion which are hampering the growth, development and prosperity of the city.

As of July 2016, DPR has been prepared by RITES and submitted to state government. [1]

However, the good ridership in Agra is doubtful like other towns in Uttar Pradesh. The most feasible cities of having metro rails are Lucknow and Noida because these cities have the strong number of daily commuters which includes the public from other parts of the state and within the city itself.No other towns of the state are having the metro culture like Lucknow and Noida. Government is in much doubt to construct metro in these small towns of UP. The huge fund is needed for these projects and government is thinking repeatedly as the money must not go in waste. Lucknow metro rail corporation has got the responsibility to implement the work here. The suggestions are not to construct metro in towns like Kanpur, Meerut, Agra, Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Moradabad, Bareilly, Kannauj, Shikohabad, and Gorakhpur etc. However, the government should think to connect these towns to nearby big cities via rapid transport will be a good and feasible idea.

Cost

Cost of construction is estimated at Rs 350 crore per km. The cost will be evaluated based on the June 2015 price index.

Status updates

  • July 2016: Detailed Project Report submitted to state government. [2]
  • September 2017: Central government rejected the DPR of Agra Metro as it didn't confirm with the new Metro Rail Policy 2017 introduced that month.[3]
  • January 2018: UP Government Cabinet decides to build metro in Meerut, Kanpur and Agra.[4]
  • Sep 2018: Detailed Project Report (DPR) sent by UP Government to Central government.[5]
