Jiaoliao or JiaoLiao Mandarin (simplified Chinese: 胶辽官话; traditional Chinese: 膠遼官話; pinyin: JiāoLiáo Guānhuà ) is a primary dialect of Mandarin Chinese, spoken on the Shandong Peninsula, from Yantai to Qingdao, Ganyu District in northeastern Jiangsu and Liaodong Peninsula, from Dalian to Dandong, and along the Yalu River and the Ussuri River, in northeast China. Yantai, Dalian, and Weihai dialects are the standard JiaoLiao Mandarin.[2]

JiaoLiao Mandarin is also called Lai (Chinese: ), for the state of Lai and its people who lived on the JiaoLiao Peninsulas.[3]

Etymology

Jiao is short for the Jiao River. Liao is short for the Liaodong Peninsula, and the name Liaodong means "East of the Liao River". (Liao is also an abbreviation used for the city of Liaoyang.)
