New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) is an airport currently under construction at Kulon Progo Regency, which will serve Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia, and will be operated by Angkasa Pura I.[1] Due to dispute over land acquisition, the construction work for the airport is delayed. The airport is expected to be operational in 2021.[2]

The airport will replace Adisutjipto International Airport, which is currently over capacity. The new airport is initially expected to accommodate 15 million passengers annually upon completion. It will be developed in two phases. In the first phase of development, the airport will have a terminal area of 130,000 square meters with a capacity of up to 15 million passengers per year and the runway will be 3,250 meter x 60 meter.[3] Total land area of the airport is about 645 hectare.[4] In the second phase of development (2031-2041) the new airport terminal will be developed to 195,000 square meters that can accommodate up to 20 million passengers per year. The length of the runway will be extended by 350 meters to 3,600 meters and 45 meters wide with apron that can be parked up to 45 aircraft.[5] Future plan also includes to turn the airport into an airport city integrated with industrial, and tourism area.

The airport is designed to be resistant to earthquakes measuring up to 8.8 on the Richter magnitude scale as it was constructed in an earthquake-prone area, and will be equipped with tsunami mitigation facilities.[6] The airport planned to be connected to Yogyakarta city center via a toll road and railway line.[7] The rail use existing rail track plus 4 kilometers new rail from Kedundang Station to Temon Airport. As the length of new rail track is short, it is expected the train will be ready when the airport is ready to operate.[8]
