List of canonically crowned images

Spaniard bishop José Vilaplana Blasco, as proxy in the name of Pope Benedict XVI crowning the image of Santa Maria Victoria in Spain.
The canonical document of Papal bull for Our Lady of Hope of Triana, legally granting the Marian image the Pontifical right to wear a crown in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.

The following list enumerates the various Marian, Josephian, and Christological images venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, by which a Pope has officially issued a Papal bull of canonical coronation either by the Pontiff, a Papal legate or a Papal nuncio.

The Papal decree issued by Pope Pius XII for the canonical coronation of Virgen de los Remedios de Pampanga in 1956.

The very first Marian image crowned without a direct papal approval was by Cardinal Francesco Sforza Pallavicino with La Madonna della Oropa on 30 August 1620. The first Marian image Pontifically crowned was the painted image of La Madonna della Febbre (Madonna of Fever) on 27 May 1631 by Pope Urban VIII through the Vatican Chapter located at the Sacristy of Saint Peter's Basilica.

The solemn prescription of ritual to crowning images is embedded in Ordo Coronandi Imaginem Beatae Mariae Virginis published by the Holy Office on 25 May 1981. Prior to 1989, papal bulls concerning the authorization of canonical coronations were handwritten on parchment. After 1989, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments began issuing the specific recognition to crown a religious image, spelling out its approved devotional title and authorizing Papal legate. Several venerated images of the Child Jesus and Saint Joseph have also been granted a Pontifical coronation.

Eodem in templo divinus cultus nitide peragitur a frugiferae Congregationis Beatae Mariae Immaculatae sacerdotibus, qui sanctuario addicti religiosam vitam in adiectis aedibus vivunt bonoque spirituali peregrinorum prospiciunt.

Notes

  1. The Chiquinquira image first obtained approval from Pope Pius X dated on a Papal bull from 9 January 1910.
  2. The title of the Virgin Mary in her apparition to Soubirous Bernadette as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Public devotion of the cult used officially used the Marian title Our Lady of the Rosary due to the description that she was holding a Brigittine rosary. Years of cult devotion translated her image into its local place of devotion, now known as Our Lady of Lourdes.
  3. Contested by supposed coronation of Our Lady of Visitation of Guibang, Isabela in May 1973, but is disputed due to lack of formal documentation authorizing to crown the image within the Papal archives in Rome.
  4. The image was canonically crowned by Pope Pius XII in 1946 accompanied with a Papal bull via the Papal legate, Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella, Pope John Paul II made a simple addendum to the same crown by placing his assassination bullet within the crown in 1982. Out of the Six official statues created by Jose Thedim, only the image at the Santuario de Fatima is canonically crowned.
  5. Crowned by the Papal legate to Great Britain, Gerald O'Hara on the Feast of the Assumption 1954 with gold donations from devotees accompanied with Papal bull from Rome. No canonical approval yet granted for Our Lady of Willesden or Our Lady of Caversham.
  6. The New York Carmel image possesses a Papal bull matching the copy in Rome requested by Father Scipio Tofinni, whereas the Czestochowa Virgin of Cantius Chicago and the Virgin of Carmel statue in Melrose, Illinois does not, though such crowns were blessed by Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, neither the torched image of Divine Providence of Puerto Rico crowned in 1976-belonging to the USA territory, granted their title of "Patroness" in 1969 but no Papal bull or documentation exists for their devotion in Rome expressively granting such Pontifical act.
  7. Pope Benedict XVI authorised the coronation, due to the process of waiting for the finished crown occurred on 22 August 2013, at Pope Francis' new pontificate.
