Birsa Munda Airport (IATA: IXR, ICAO: VERC), also known as Ranchi Airport, is the primary airport serving the city of Ranchi, the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is named after Indian tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda and is currently managed by Airports Authority of India. The airport is located in Hinoo, approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from the centre of the city. The whole airport sprawls over 1568 acres of land though AAI has control over an area of 546 acres (221 hectares) only.[2] The airport is used by more than 1.5 million passengers annually and is the 28th busiest airport in India.[3]

Terminals

Integrated terminal

The new integrated passenger terminal building at Birsa Munda Airport was inaugurated by the then civil aviation minister Ajit Singh on March 24, 2013.

The terminal building spreading over 19,600 sqm has been constructed at a cost of Rs 138 crore. It has two aero-bridges and six escalators. All the equipments used have been imported from China, Germany and Singapore. The airport has capacity to handle 500 domestic and 200 international passengers at a time.[4]

In March 2013, the tax on aviation turbine fuel sold at the airport was reduced from 20% to 4% to attract more airlines to the city. Overnight parking of aircraft at the airport was made free-of-charge to encourage airlines to schedule their aircraft to remain overnight, so that there may be more early-morning flights to the metro cities.[5] The Airports Authority of India also announced the construction of three more parking bays, thereby making it the first Tier-II airport in India to have eight planned aircraft parking bays.[6] The construction work is scheduled to be completed within a few months.[7] Two new aerobridges will be added to the terminal[7][8] and the runway will also be expanded.[9][10]

Cargo terminal

A new cargo terminal was inaugurated in February 2017 by Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar das . The terminal can handle 50 MT of cargo everyday.

It is equipped with explosive trace detection devices, cargo X-ray machines, hardware security machines, and CCTV cameras.[11]
