Their season was shortened due that Tarrafal de Monte Trigo again did not compete, and two additional, Lajedos who was runner up last season and Associação Santo André, the region's least successful club. Their reasons was in part due to financial and material. This reduced to six clubs that participated in the competition with the last being in 2010, this would be less successful for Académica than the 2016 and the 2017 seasons, but they would be more successful than the six match 2012 season. The club won their 12th title[1] and became the next club to win eight consecutive titles of each island leagues, others are CS Mindelense of nearby São Vicente several times between the foundation up to 1994, Botafogo of Fogo in 1981 and Brava's Nô Pintcha in 1996. The title total has became to be one of the most number of clubs having the most regional titles.[1]

Académica Porto Novo's regional championship titles covers more than half of the 24 regional titles won with the exception of some seasons in the late 1990s.
