List of Manchester Metrolink tram stops

Cornbrook tram stop, a major interchange on the Metrolink network
Geographic map of the system

Since opening in 1992, the Manchester Metrolink light-rail/tram system has grown to a network of 93 tram stops.

The system opened in April 1992 with 20 tram stops with routes radiating from Manchester Victoria to Bury and Manchester Piccadilly to Altrincham. Phase 2 extended the network to Eccles with 12 new tram stops and a new interchange at Cornbrook was built in 1999. Phase 3a involved the construction of 36 new stops and new lines to Rochdale via Oldham, Tameside and East Didsbury. The first stops as part of Phase 3a opened in 2011 and the final stop opened in 2014. A new 9 miles (14 km) line to Manchester Airport became operational in November 2014 – 12 months ahead of schedule.[1][2]

The network consists of over 57 miles (92 km) of track, making it the largest tram system in the United Kingdom and second only to the London Underground in terms of an urban commuter network. As of 2015, upon the completion of Exchange Square tram stop in Manchester city centre, the Metrolink system has 93 stops. Primary future proposals include a new 3.4 miles (5.5 km) line to Trafford Park. Once this is built, the Metrolink network would be over 62 miles (100 km) in length and have 99 stops. Other proposals include tram-trains to Bolton and Wigan and an extension from East Didsbury to Stockport.

Future

Proposed

Delivery of the new Trafford Park Line is a primary aim for TfGM with an official schematic map released in 2014.[6] A public consultation was launched in July 2014 with the intention of work applications and tendering expected in 2015.[7] It is anticipated that construction on the new line will begin in 2016 with the line operational by 2019 at the latest.[8] If the 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) line is built, it would take the length of the Metrolink network over 100 kilometres (62 mi) making it one of the largest modern tram systems in Europe.

The proposed Manchester Interchange for the High Speed 2 extension to Manchester is expected to be connected to Manchester Airport by a newly constructed Wythenshawe Loop.[9]

Buckley Wells has been proposed as an additional stop on the Bury Line.[10]
