Ancestral background of presidents of the United States
The ancestral background of presidents of the United States has usually been consistent throughout American history. Oftentimes opposition arose to incoming waves of immigrants of differing ethnic backgrounds and their respective cultures, such times led to movements that claimed to champion the interests of the native population, such as the founding of the nativist American Party in 1844. Future president Theodore Roosevelt remarked in 1882, "[t]he average Catholic Irishman of the first generation . . . is a low, venal, corrupt and unintelligent brute."[1]
