About the village

Plantations formerly dominated the majority of a part of Terreiro Velho and its surrounding area, much of these are completely forested and likely that agriculture is expected to disappear from the area. Fishing remains to be the key industry of the village as well as agriculture as with many places on the island. It may be one of the poorest places in the nation before Neves Ferreira in the south.

In the mid-1990s, businessman (or entrepreneur) and an agricultural engineer Claudio Corallo who is now a university professor at USTP, bought an abandoned cocoa plantation for 120 hectares (over a square kilometer) in Terreiro Velho[2] (Old Third) on the island of Príncipe. He cultivated on that island and had produced a product with high quality which was considered the greatest chocolate on Earth,[3][4] controlled all the production process from the tree to the tablet.[2]

Nature

A butterfly subspecies, Acraea severina terreirovelhoensis was first described in the area[5] as well as Bematistes alcinoe racaji, Acraea pharsalus carmen[6], Theretra orpheus gauthieri and a butterfly species Eucosmocydia terreirana.[7]

Other fauna including other butterflies and insects as well as birds, frogs and small reptiles are founded in the area.
