Novo Estrela (Portuguese for new star) is a village in the southeastern part of Príncipe Island in São Tomé and Príncipe. ts population is 263 (2008 est.),[1] Novo Estrela is located 2 km southeast of the island capital of Santo António and is connected with a dirt road linking via the bay. The settlement was first founded as a plantation.

Nearby settlements include Portinho to the northeast, Terreiro Velho to the southwest and Bela Vista to the west.

About the village

Plantations formerly dominated the majority of a part of Novo Estrela and its surrounding area, much of these are completely forested and likely that agriculture is expected to disappear from the area. Fishing remains to be the key industry of the village as well as agriculture as with many places on the island. It may be one of the poorest places in the nation before Neves Ferreira in the south.

GD 1º de Maio is the football (soccer) club of the village, it currently participates in the minor island championships. they play at Estádio 13 de Julho located northwest of the village and south of Santo António.

Nature

A butterfly subspecies, Acraea severina terreirovelhoensis was first described near the area[2] as well as Bematistes alcinoe racaji, Acraea pharsalus carmen[3] and a butterfly species Eucosmocydia terreirana.[4]

Other fauna including other butterflies and insects as well as birds, frogs and small reptiles are founded in the area.
