Line 17 of the Beijing Subway (Chinese: 北京地铁17号线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě shíqī hàoxiàn), also known by its codename, Line R2 (Chinese: 北京地铁R2线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě R èr xiàn),[1] is an express rapid transit line under construction in Beijing.[2][3] Line 17 is planned to run parallel and to the east of Line 5 from the Future Science Park North station in Changping District to Yizhuang Zhanqianqu South station in Daxing District.[4][5] The line is expected to have a total length of 49.7 km (30.9 mi).[5] With stations every 2.5 km (1.6 mi) and trains operating up to 100 km/h (62 mph), Line 17 will be Beijing's first north–south express line, with expected end to end travel time to be approximately 56 minutes.[6] Line 17 is planned to utilize 8-car high-capacity wide-body A-size trains.[3] When complete the line will provide relief to the congestion on Line 5, Line 10 and Line 13.[6]

History

In January 2011, an official with the city's planning committee indicated that Line 17 of the subway was planned to run east–west through the city's Central Business District under Guanghua Road with transfers to Lines 4 and 5.[7] In February 2012, the city's planning committee identified a different Line 17, code-named R2, as a line planned for 2020, that would run north–south from Tiantongyuan to Yizhuang that would run parallel and to the east of Line 5.[8] On June 15, 2012, the city government disclosed tentatively planned stations for the R2 Line.[1][4][9][5]

On October 10, 2013, city authorities confirmed that Line 17 is in fact Line R2 and would run from the Future Science Park North Station in Changping District to Yizhuang Zhanqianqu South Station in Daxing District.[5] Construction was expected to begin in 2014 and Line 17 would have a total length of 49.7 km (30.9 mi).[5] The line will be opened in 2020.[5]

Construction on the first two stations, Future Science Park North Station and Future Science Park South Station, began on May 3, 2016.[10]
