Kupwara is a town and a municipal committee in Kupwara District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The nearby Lolab Valley, The Bungas Valley, are of great interest to tourists.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Kupwara had a population of 870,354. Males constitute 61% of the population and females 39%. Kupwara has an average literacy rate of 64.51%, above the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 64%, and female literacy is 41%..In Kupwara, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

People

A majority of the people are Muslims while there is a small community of Hindus and Sikhs in both Kupwara and Handwara tehsils. Kashmiris are the major ethnic group and speak the Kashmiri language.

Education

The district has 5 colleges, 30 Higher Secondary Schools, and 2000 educational institutions. Govt Degree College, Kupwara is the largest college in the district with total enrollment exceeding 10,000.
