Asian Colombians are Colombian citizens of Asian ancestry, The estimation of the Asians has the largest communities such as in Cali, Where it has the Chinese people due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean.

History

The first wave of Asians were the Japanese who arrived in 1929 as farmers in Valle del Cauca,[1]Then later they arrived in 1935 where they settled in the Pacific regions of Colombia. Moreover, during the 1970s to the 1980s, Another wave of Asian emigrants are the Chinese people, it was known that during the early 20th century due to xenophobia in which occurred in the United States, Great numbers of Chinese people came to the country. Also, the estimate was indicated that there were over 6,000 people of Chinese origin, meaning that they kept on coming to Colombia. [2] [3]

In the 1980s, The "Overseas Chinese Association" was founded by the Chinese people who left China and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Bogotá was established in 1988 by a Taiwanese government institution (Zhang 1991).

Japanese

The Colombian Nikkei formed a cooperative of farmers in El Jagual, which afterwards was called SAJA (Sociedad de Agricultores Japoneses), which changed to Asociación Colombo Japonesa in 1979. In addition to that, the original community had a school for Japanese children called Hikarien. The school has joined the Asociación Colombo Japonesa as a center for cultural promotion of the Japanese culture not only to the Japanese-born. In addition to that, followers of the church Tenrikyo arrived in Colombia to expand their faith.

Other Asian groups

Koreans make up the largest communities in Latin America, While others are the Indians and the Filipinos form a minority ethnic groups in the country.
