Atpara Upazila

Atpara (Bengali: আটপাড়া) is an upazila of Netrokona District,[1] in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh.

History

Amati is one of the significant villages of Atpara Upazila. Amati is not only a historical place but also a small village. The great personalities and social reformers named Md. Sonafor Uddin, Md. Muktul Hossain Khan, Md. Shariot Khan, Md. Anfor Uddin, Md. Monfor Uddin, Md. Jafor Uddin were born in Amati, P.O.-Diara, Union-Teligati of Atpara. During British period, Hindu landlord Sham Biswas was very cruel and abusive towards the local inhabitants. Even no one was allowed to pass his front yard wearing shoes or slippers. Then they stood against him. The prominent persons and social reformers organized people against this humiliation. The above-mentioned persons were against landlord Sham Biswas. Their revolution was soon followed by the other parts of the district. Amati became the symbol of revolution against tyrant landlords.

Demographics

According to 2011 Bangladesh census, Atpara had a population of 144,624. Males constituted 49.87% of the population and females 50.13%. Muslims formed 90.81% of the population, Hindus 9.09%, Christians 0.01%, and others 0.09%. Atpara had a literacy rate of 38.7% for the population 7 years and above.[2]

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Atpara has a population of 120491. Males constitute 51.15% of the population, and females 48.85%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 60858. Atpara has an average literacy rate of 24% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[3]
