Pittsburg/Bay Point is a Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Pittsburg, California, United States, adjacent to the community of Bay Point. It serves northern and eastern Contra Costa County, as well as the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Passengers transfer between the light and heavy rail portions of the Antioch–SFO/Millbrae line at a separate transfer platform east of the main station.

History

The station opened on December 7, 1996; it is in BART District 2 and is represented by Joel Keller.[2]

The extension of BART to Antioch is a DMU line starting at Pittsburg / Bay Point serving eastern Contra Costa County communities. During construction, the service was dubbed eBART (or the eastern Contra Costa County extension) but after construction, BART refers to the service between Pittsburg-Bay Point and Antioch as BART to Antioch.[3] The station was expanded to include an additional platform beyond the existing one to provide a cross-platform interchange to this service. The BART to Antioch platform does not have street access, so passengers must ride a mainline BART train between the two platforms. The DMU service currently goes from Pittsburg / Bay Point to Antioch.[4] There are proposals to extend the line further east to Oakley, Brentwood, or Byron.[5]

Incidents

A child was born in the station’s parking lot on November 26, 2012.[6]

On March 16, 2016, a mysterious power surge on the tracks between North Concord/Martinez and Pittsburg/Bay Point stations caused several cars to be taken out of service. BART halted regular service to Pittsburg/Bay Point that day, and replaced the service with a bus shuttle.[7] Limited service to Pittsburg/Bay Point resumed on March 21[8] and full service returned on April 2.[9]
