The 1918 New York gubernatorial election took place on November , 1918, to elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of New York, concurrently with elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections.

Due to New York having the most electoral votes at the time Al Smith`s victory would lead to his nomination as the Democratic candidate in the 1928 Presidential Election and in 10 years Franklin D. Roosevelt`s victory would lead to him becoming president in 1932.

Major Party Candidates

The Republican Party (United States) backed the current governor and former district attorney Charles S. Whitman who had defeated his Democratic opponent Samuel Seabury by 148,958 votes in 1916 and the Democratic Party (United States) chose the Catholic 8th President of the New York City Board of Aldermen and future presidential candidate Al Smith.

Third Party Candidates

Two socialist candidates ran for governor. The Socialist Party of America chose Charles W. Ervin and the Socialist Labor Party of America chose newspaper editor and political activist Olive M. Johnson.
