Ghatkopar is a suburb in eastern Mumbai. The area is served by the railway station on the Central Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, and the metro station on Line 1 of the Mumbai Metro.

Mumbai Metro Project

The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor of the Mumbai Metro project is an 11.07 km long double line corridor on an elevated viaduct. The route uses Standard Gauge air-conditioned trains with 12 elevated stations.[2] It has a carrying capacity of 60,000 persons per hour and the commuting time on the entire stretch is 21 minutes. Today the commuting time between Versova and Ghatkopar is reduced by 70 minutes. Metro started running successfully from July 2014.[3]

Crime

Ghatkopar has one of the highest crime rates in the Eastern Suburbs. The Ghatkopar police station recorded 669 cases in 2016, the highest of any station in the Eastern Suburbs. The most reported crimes in the area in 2016 were theft (123 cases), followed by assault (117), vehicle theft (61) and house-break-ins at night (55). Other crimes included rape (20 cases), attempted murder (3) and murder (2 cases). Overall, as of March 2017, the police station reported that it had solved 58% of the cases registered with it in 2016. The station also stated that it had solved all homicide and attempt to murder cases, and 19 of 20 cases of rape registered with it in that year.[4]


Philip Pandare a gangster was ruling Ghatkopar area during the 1980s.[5] Philip Pandare had stabbed Bada Rajan in a local train.[6]
