Mulund is a suburb in the north-east of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is also a railway station on the Central Railway line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. It is nestled alongside the foothills of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park with easy access to the Eastern Express Highway and Navi Mumbai through the Mulund-Airoli Bridge. Mulund marks the end of Mumbai city. Mulund has been awarded as the prince of suburbs with Bandra as the princess.^[6][7]

History

Historical records of Mulund date back to the time of Mauryan empire ruled by Prathestha Misr, the governor appointed by Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. Prathestha Misr was responsible for the development of Mulund and surrounding areas and its integration into the broader principality of Vidharbha rashtra.

Mulund is the earliest planned neighborhood of Mumbai city. A gridiron plan was designed by architects Crown & Carter in 1922, which extends from present day Mulund railway station to Paanch Rasta road Junction in Mulund (West).

Localities

Mulund is home to a cosmopolitan mix of large number of industrial factories along present day L.B.S. road, some of which are the pharmaceutical companies - Hoechst, Wellcome, Glaxo, Merind and Johnson & Johnson. Engineering companies like Richardson Cruddas, Bombay Oxygen, Chicago Pneumatic, ACC, Agfa & Gabriel were also around. Eventually these industrial units have shifted out of Mulund and have been converted to shopping malls and luxurious residential apartment complexes altering the landscape and skyline. Johnson and Johnson factory still remains one of the avant garde modern architectural landmarks of Mulund. Towards the late 90s this suburb acquired a new image with winds of globalization slowly reaching the people here. Old buildings and structures gave way to new malls and cineplexes. This change is most apparent along the L.B.S. Road which today is lined with two major shopping malls, R-Mall and Nirmal Lifestyle. The Nirmal Lifestyle mall is currently shut and it will be replaced by residential complex. Along the link road, there is D-Mart and the world-class hospital - Fortis Hospital. Skyscrapers have lined the landscape, replacing old factories that is new skyscraper of 45 floors in Sarvoday Nagar. Old tailors and garment cut-piece stores have given way to Fashion Boutiques.

Transport

Mulund Station falls on the central line of Mumbai railway. While traveling by railway from CST, previous Railway station is Nahur & next is Thane. Mulund is well connected to other suburbs and other cities as well by adequate network of trains, BEST buses and roads including a national highway. Mulund is a stop for slow local trains as well as semi-fast local trains on the central line of the Mumbai suburban network. Metro IV which is currently under construction will pass through Mulund's L.B.S. Road.

Demographics

The pleasant living conditions and easy access to different parts of the city and its outskirts, have attracted many new residents. The population is around 7,50,000 according to the 2011 census data.

Entertainment

Kalidas Hall, Mulund

Mulund has several cinema halls including Big Cinemas (at R-Mall) and PVR (at Nirmal Lifestyles). However, the single screen theaters like Mehul have lost their sheen in the recent years after the multiplexes have opened. Jawahar, the oldest theatre has shut shop and so has Deepmandir. However, the Jai Ganesh theatre in Mulund (E) has seen some renovation recently. Kalidas Auditorium is the only auditorium in Mulund which regularly hosts Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi plays apart from musical shows. Maharashtra Seva Sangh above Apna Bazaar on JN Road also holds a number of events particularly in the Marathi literary world.

The suburb is also home to several gymkhanas and fitness centres, including Mulund Gymkhana and Talwalkars. Kalidas Sports Complex is the major sports complex.

Mulund has two large shopping malls on LBS Marg, Nirmal Lifestyles and R-Mall. R-Mall is the first mall in Mulund and Thane. It also hosts a four screen multiplex called as the Big Cinemas. Nirmal Lifestyles is the largest mall with a number of stores like Shoppers Stop, and restaurants including McDonald's, and cafe including Manchester United Cafe Bar, Cafe Coffee Day, apart from six screen PVR multiplex. Vasant Garden is one of the popular hangout place of youngsters in Mulund near Yogi Hills - also a shortcut to go Sanjay Gandhi National Park & Tulsi Lake. It is suitable for trekking. Mulund is also the house to one of the best and culturally active society, Golden Willows. This is the same society which hosts the famous Golden Willows Premier League since 11 years.

Mulund is home to people from various faiths and as a result, there are a large number of temples, gurdwaras, churches and other places of worship.

St. Pius X Church is the oldest Catholic Church in Mulund. Their choir is one of the best in Mumbai.

Amala Matha Church is the only Catholic Church for Syro-Malabar Malayalee Catholics from Mulund.

Mithagarcha Raja is one of the most famous Sarvajanik Ganapati in Mulund, a prominent suburban locality in Mumbai. The idol is kept for public visit for blessings for Eleven days thereafter it is immersed on the auspicious day of Anant Chaturdashi. This Sarvajanik Ganapati is celebrated by Navatarun Utkash Ganeshotsav Mandal, Samaj Kalyan Kendra, MHB Colony, Mithagar Road, Mulund-East. Since the last 5 years, this mandal organises “Bhandara” (Mahaprasad for all devotees) along with on first Saturday during the festival. Many of devotees willingly donate the fund for the same. This is the only Mandal in Mulund-East organises such activity. At Mithagaracha Raja, there no line or no entry passes for darshan. Any devotee can go near to idol, touch the idol for blessings & perform puja. Mithagarcha Raja is famous for its huge & attractive Visarjan Miravnuk (Procession). Mithagarcha Raja is consistently winning best Ganapati awards for many criteria like decoration, police cooperation, peace committee etc. in Mumbai city. In 2014, the Mithagarcha Raja Ganpati is now in its 30th year.

History: Mithagarcha Raja is the popular Ganesh Idol of the Navatarun Utkarsh Ganeshotsav Mandal. The Mandal was founded in 1985 at MHB Colony, Mithagar Road, Mulund- East. The Mandal started in 1985 in temporary Pandol in front of KET’s Vaze College. Later in 1993, local corporator Late Wamanrao Parab built a permanent building for the Mandal under the name of Samaj Kalyan Kendra. This building is further used by Navatarun Utkarsh Ganeshotsav Mandal & Samaj Kalyan Kendra for many social activities. This mandal has total strength of approximately 100 cooperative Karyakartas (Volunteers).

The Idol: The Mithagarcha Raja Ganesh idol (Sinhasan Mudra) has been sculpted by many of famous sculptors like Khatu family, Banty Pohekar etc. The workshop of these sculptors is situated at lower parel central railway workshop, near Lalbaugcha Raja.

Bal Rajeshwar Mandir - It is one of the famous Shiv Mandir in the city of mulund which is located in Mulund west opposite Vikas Paradise. It is 1.6 km from Mulund station. The Temple is almost a century Old.

Ambaji Dham is Temple dedicated to the Goddess and is considering a Shakti Peeth by the Locals.

Sarvodaya Jain temple is a beautiful White Marble Temple located in Sarvodaya Nagar, It is dedicated to Parshvanath, The 23rd Tirthankar of Jain Tradition.
