From Pali upakaraṇa (accessory), from upa (secondary; subordinate) + karaṇa (making; creation; production; etc); or from Sanskrit उपकरण (upakaraṇa, idem), from उप (upa, idem) + करण (karaṇa, idem); equivalent to Thai อุป (ùp) + กรณ์. Cognate with Old Khmer upakaraṇa (assistance, support; instrument, equipment; etc); Modern Khmer ឧបករណ៍ (ʾupaʾkɑɑ).
