Probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₂-. Compare Latin ava (maternal aunt; wife of uncle), avus (grandfather), avia (grandmother), Old Armenian հաւ (haw, grandfather), Proto-Germanic *awǭ (> Gothic 𐌰𐍅𐍉 (awō, grandmother)).
