Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₂-. Compare Latin ava (“maternal aunt; wife of uncle”), avus (“grandfather”), avia (“grandmother”), Old Armenian հաւ (haw, “grandfather”), Proto-Germanic *awǭ (> Gothic 𐌰𐍅𐍉 (awō, “grandmother”)).
