Timeline of the war in Donbass (October–December 2016)

1 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 34 occasions on Ukrainian troops on 30 September, including on 16 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 10 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region.^[2][3][4] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region during the last day of September. The casualties occurred north of Donetsk city, at Avdiivka.^[5] Deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 178 occasions on pro-Russian positions. Eighty-three incidents involved 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasynuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Mikhaylivka, Zhabicheve, and Sakhanka.^[6] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces from Stanytsia Luhanska opened small arms fire on pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial.^[7]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 17 occasions. Most incidents took place in the region of Mariupol, where the rebels fired small arms and rocket propelled grenades on Pavlopil, Shyrokyne, Hnutove and Novoselivka. Pavlopil also came under 82 mm mortar fire. West of Donetsk city, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka, which also became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The same kind of weapons were used by pro-Russian forces to attack Novhorodske, near the town of Horlivka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian forces at Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka and Stanytsia Luhanska received small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Hostile snipers were active in the area of Novozvanivka.^[8]

2 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 20 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 17 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels made a wide use of banned weapons, such as 82 mm and 120 mm mortars in several locations around Donetsk city and Mariupol and antiaircraft guns in the northern front (Luhansk region). Hostile armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Vodiane, north of Mariupol.^[9][10][11] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 1 October.^[12] Pro-Russian sources said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 269 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Most incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Mikhaylivka, Zhabicheve and Sakhanka. The banned heavy weapons were employed specially in the surroundings of Donetsk city. Two pro-Russian soldiers were killed in action.^[13] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions inside the republic's territory. The village of Kalinove-Borshchevate was the target of small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades and 120 mm mortar volleys fired from Novoselivka, while Ukrainian troops from Stanytsia Luhanska targeted pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms fire and antitank guided missiles. Small arms fire from Luhanske was reported at Lozove.^[14]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 22 occasions. Avdiivka, Marinka, Verkhnyotoretske and Novhorodske, in the area around Donetsk city and Horlivka, came under light weapons fire. Avdiivka was also the target of heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Separatist troops in the area also fired automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers to attack Pavlopil and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian troops at Vodiane received small arms fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, heavy shelling was reported at Krymske, which came under small arms, rocket propelled grenade, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Separatist forces attacked Stanytsia Luhanska with small arms, rocket launchers and antiaircraft guns. Ukrainian troops at Novozvanivka were harassed with small arms fire.^[15] The operational headquarters confirmed that one Ukrainian volunteer was killed at Krymske.^[16][17][18] Later in the evening, Ukrainian sources on the field reported that pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka,^[19] while armoured fighting vehicles shelled Shyrokyne.^[20]

As of 1 October, the warring parties had moved their forces several kilometres away from the town of Zolote, Luhansk Oblast, in accordance with the three security areas established by the Minsk agreements.^[21]

3 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region.^[20][22][23] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 2 October.^[24] Pro-Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian troops opened fire 90 times on their positions with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery directed by drones. The main incidents took place at Zaitseve, Vasiliivka, Yasinuvata, Sakhanka, Trudovske and Petrovsky dristict.^[25] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported one pro-Russian soldier killed and two others wounded when Ukrainian forces attacked the area of Krymske with small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery.^[26]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 15 occasions. In the area of Donetsk city, the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Harassing fire from small arms was reported in Popasna and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line, while in the region of Mariupol, rocket propelled grenades landed in Shyrokyne and Bohdanivka, where Ukrainian troops also received harassing fire. Small arms fire raked Ukrainian outposts at Pavlopil and Starohnativka. The Ukrainian military suspended the withdrawal from the safe area of Petrovske after pro-Russian forces opened up with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.^[27]

One Ukrainian volunteer from the Right Sector party was killed in a clash with pro-Russian scouts during the night of 3 October.^[28]

4 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 32 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 10 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in Luhansk region.^[29][30][31] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 3 October.^[32][33] The casualty occurred in the region of Zaitseve.^[33] Pro-Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 126 occasions over the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and tanks. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Yasinuvata and Spartak, which also came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Trudovske, Vesele, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport were likewise shelled from 82 mm mortars. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Victorivka and Sakhanka.^[34] No Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded in the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic.^[35]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 19 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels launched antitank guided missiles on Ukrainian redoubts at Slavne, while Shyrokyne and Hnutove came under small arms and heavy machine gun fire. Around Donetsk city, the stronghold of Avdiivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka, Novozvanivka and Popasna came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire; 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys also landed in Novooleksandrivka. Hostile snipers were active at Stepne and Novooleksandrivka.^[36][37][38]

5 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 68 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 36 occasions in Luhansk region. The incidents involved attacks by pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles on Ukrainian forces at Talakivka and Lebedynske, in the region of Mariupol, and at Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern front. Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka also became the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery, while 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city.^[39][40][41] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 4 October.^[42] Deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 247 occasions on their positions on the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military shelled Trudovske with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm howitzers, and Zhabicheve, Spartak and Yasinuvata with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Ukrainian tanks attacked pro-Russian redoubts at Zaitseve, supported by 82 mm mortar fire. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Kominternove and Sakhanka.^[43] Two rebel soldiers were killed and another wounded in Makiivka by the explosion of an improvised device, which also struck an electrical subestation, leaving Scheglovskaya-Grubokaya mining complex without power and 126 workers temporarily trapped underground.^[44] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire within the republic's boundaries on six occasions. Ukrainian forces from Popasna fired small arms and 120 mm mortars on Kalinove, while armoured fighting vehicles from the Ukrainian stronghold of Stanytsia Luhanska engaged pro-Russian entrenchments around Knyaz Igor memorial, which was also the target of small arms fire.^[45]

The Ukrainian military reported in the evening that by 06:00 pm 13 attacks on their positions had taken place. Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian positions at Balka Kosharna, near Slovianoserbsk, in the northern section of the demarcation line. Balka Krutenka, in the same area, came under 120 mm mortar fire, while the Ukrainian strongholds of Trokhizbenka and Novozvanivka became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar barrages landed in Taramchuk, and hostile snipers were reported at Hnutove and Shyrokyne. Ukrainian troops at Chermalik, Starohnativka, Shyrokyne and Vodiane received harassing fire from small arms and heavy machine guns. West of Donetsk city, the rebels fired small arms fire at Maryinka.^[46]

6 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 40 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 8 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 12 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels made wide use of banned weapons, specially in the northern section of the demarcation line, where Ukrainian positions were pounded by pro-Russian tanks near Slovianoserbsk, and 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles between Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka.^{[47][48][49][50]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian soldier was killed, another wounded, and the third serviceman contused in action in the Donbass region on 5 October.^[50] Sources from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic recorded 130 Ukrainian attacks ontheir troops. Ukrainian tanks once again engaged rebel redoubts at Yasinuvata, which was also the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery; 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys also landed in nearby Vesele, Spartak, Trudovske and Donetsk airport. Small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Panteleymonivka and Spartak.^[51] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic denounced that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the republic boundaries. The village of Kalinove became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka. Rebel troops at Lozove came under small arms fire from Luhanske.^[52]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 12 occasions. The Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk, was struck twice by heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. In the same area, Ukrainian troops were fired at from small arms and rocket launchers in Maryinka. In the region of Mariupol, sniper fire was reported at Pavlopil, while rebel troops attacked Shyrokyne with small arms and rocket launchers. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian forces at Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka, Popasna and Stanytsia Luhanska came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.^[53]

7 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 4 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region^[54][55] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 6 October.^[56] According to separatist sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on 1352 over the past week; five pro-Russian were killed in action and other three wounded on the same period.^[57] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported two Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the territory of the republic. Ukrainian forces from Satnitsya Luhanske attacked pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms and Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns. Lohvynove, meanwhile, became the target of small arms fire and 82 mm mortar volleys fired from Luhanske.^[58]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions 11 times. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka and Zaitseve came under machine gun, rocket propelled grenade and 82 mm mortar fire. In the region of Mariupol, small arms and sniper fire was reported at Hranitne and Shyrokyne. In the northern front, the rebels fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian troops near Novooleksandrivka on six occasions.^[59][60]

8 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 38 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 17 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 15 occasions in Luhansk region. The rebels used banned heavy weapons in a number of instances. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian troops at Maryinka and Shyrokyne, while Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka were shelled from 120 mm mortars, 122 mm self-propelled artillery and 152 mm howitzers.^[61][62][63] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and two others contused in action in the Donbass region on 7 October.^[64] Pro-Russian officials from the Donetsk People's Republic recorded 231 Ukrainian attacks on their positions over the past 24 hours. Most incidents involved the use of banned heavy weapons. The Ukrainian military shelled the rebel strongholds of Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Trudovske, Zaitseve and Oleksandrivka with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Oleksandrivka also became the target of 152 mm howitzers. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was also reported at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Sakhanka, Signalne, Oyerzanivka, Novolaspa and Petrovsky district One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded.^[65] Two civilian residents were wounded by shelling in Sakhanka.^[66]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 24 occasions. Around Donetsk city, the rebels pounded Ukrainian redoubts at Avdiivka, Maryinka and Kamyanka with small arms fire, machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Krasnohorivka was the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The same weapons were used to shell the Ukrainian strongholds of Shyrokyne and Vodiane, in the region of Mariupol. Separatist troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Ukrainian positions in Starohnativka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Krymske and Novozvanivka became the target of light weapons and grenade launchers.^[67]

9 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region.^[68][69][70] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in the Donbass region on 8 October.^[71] Pro-Russian authorities from the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 252 occasions. The Ukrainian military shelled Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Sakhanka and Leninske with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Zaitseve, Oleksandrivka, Gagarin coal mine, Vasiilivka, Leninske and Sakhanka. Ukrainian infantry also broke through the demarcation line at Leninske, killing two pro-Russian soldiers and taking another prisoner.^[72] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported five Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the territory of the republic. Three houses were destroyed in Stakhanove when the village was shelled from Novozvanivka with 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Kalinove and Kalinove-Borshchevate became the target of automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars also firing from Novozvanivka. Kalinove was also struck by 82 mm and 12 mm mortar barrages fired from Ukrainian positions at Novooleksandrivka.^[73] The same sources claimed to have brought down a Ukrainian RQ-11 drone near Sokolniki.^[74]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 10 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, heavy shelling was reported at Shyrokyne, which came under 122 mm artillery fire. Rebel forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Ukrainian troops in Pavlopil and Hranitne.^[75] In the area around Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka and Novhorodske supported by small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. Light weapons and rocket propelled grenades were also fired at nearby Maryinka.^[76]

10 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 4 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region.^[77][78][79] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 9 October.^[80] Pro-Russian sources from the Donetsk People's Republic claimed that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 314 occasions. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian entrenchments at Yasinuvata and Donetsk airport with the support of 82 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled guns, while 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Sakhanka, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske and Petrovsky district. Small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Horlivka, Zaitseve, Panteleymonivka, Zheleznaya Balka, Velaya Kamyanka, Novo Mariivka, Sakhanka, Trudovske and Petrovsky district.^[81] No Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.^[82]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 16 occasions.^[83] At least 8 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded due to heavy shelling in the region of Mariupol.^[84] The situation in and around Shyrokyne was characterised as tense. Pro-Russian forces used small arms, heavy machine guns, and armoured fighting vehicles to attack the Ukrainian strongholds of Hnutove, Pavlopil and Shyrokyne, in the region of Mariupol, Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka, in the northern front and Maryinka, west of Donetsk city. Heavy shelling was also reported at Talakivka and Shyrokyne, which became the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortar barrages.^[85] One female civilian was contused in Vodiane as a result of shelling.^[86]

11 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 17 occasions in Luhansk region.^[87][88][89] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, eight wounded, and three contused in action in the Donbass region on 10 October.^[90][91] According to officials from the Donetsk People's Republic, the Ukrainian military opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 492 occasions, 334 of them using banned heavy weapons, among them 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Sakhanka, Kominternove, Sosnovske, Zaitseve, Zheleznaya Balka, Yasinovataya, Bezimenne, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske and Donetsk airport. Four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were reported inside the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Pro-Russian forces at Kalinove became the target of small arms, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka.^[92][93]

In Mariupol, 122 mm artillery barrages landed in Vodiane and Shyrokyne, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys in Talakivka and 82 mm in Lebedynske. Ukrainian forces at Maryinka, west of Donetsk city, came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Troops fired small arms at Ukrainian troops in the region of Luhansk, in the northern section of the demarcation line.^[94]

12 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 34 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 7 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 3 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.^[95][96][97] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 11 October.^[98] Pro-Russian sources from the Donetsk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 333 occasions on their positions. Most incidents occurred around Mariupol, where the Ukrainian shelled Kominternove, Oktyabr, Sakhanka and Leninske with 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Spartak, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades, attacked pro-Russian entrenchments at Zheleznaya Balka, Donetsk airport and Maiorsk.^[99] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire two times inside the republic boundaries, when Kalinove was hit by mortar fire from Novozvanivka and Kalinove was shelled by automatic grenade launchers firing from Novooleksandrivka.^[100]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 24 occasions. Most incidents took place in the region of Mariupol, where 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Vodiane and Talakivka. The rebels also fired small arms and mortars at Ukrainian troops at Shyrokyne.^[101] In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Novooleksandrivka, supported by small arms fire and rocket launchers. Novozvanivka became under heavy machine gun and 82 mm mortar fire. Around Donetsk city, Novotroitske was struck by 120 mm mortar volleys.^[102] Clashes between the warring parties took place at Marinka, where both sides exchanged heavy machine gun and mortar fire.^[101] A 63-year-old woman was wounded in her home in Marinka by shelling at around 4:00 pm.^[103]

13 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 36 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 2 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region.^{[104][105][106]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that seven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and two contused in action in the Donbass region on 12 October.^[107] Eduard Basurin, deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on their forces on 168 occasions, 127 of them using banned heavy weapons. East of Mariupol, the Ukrainian military shelled Leninske, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Nova Tavrya and Bezimenne with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars and 122 self-propelled artillery. In the outskirts of Donetsk, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Yasinuvata and Spartak. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Sakhanka, Yasinuvata and Petrovsky district, where the Ukrainian troops also employed small arms and grenade launchers. Basurin claimed that Polish and Georgian mercenaries from the "Azov" battalion broke through the demarcation line between Leninske and Kominternove. The intruders were repelled with heavy casualties. Pro-Russian forces also reported three Ukrainian BMPs knocked down.^[108] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire on five occasions within the republic borders. According to these sources, 120 mm mortar fire struck Pervomaisk, causing extensive damage on a metal works plant and on a Civil Defence facility. Pro-Russian troops at Kalinove became the target of SPG-9 antitank recoilless rifles and 152 mm field artillery firing from Novozvanivka, while rebel positions around Knyaz Igor memorial came under small arms fire from Stanytsia Luhanska.^[109]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 7 occasions. The main target was the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka, west of Donetsk city, which was fired at from small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the region of Mariupol, mortar and 122 mm artillery barrages landed in Vodiane and Talakivka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, rocket propelled grenade fire was reported at Stanytsia Luhanska, while Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka came under small arms fire.^[110][111] The Minister of Defence Stepan Poltorak confirmed that the planned withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Stanytsia Luhanska has been postponed to unforeseen future.^[112][113] Poltorak characterised the situation in Shyrokyne as the most troubled.^[114]

14 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 14 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 10 occasions in Luhansk region, and once in the surroundings of Donetsk city.^{[115][116][117]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 13 October.^[118] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city recorded 2,060 Ukrainian attacks on their forces over the past week. Five separatist soldiers were killed and another nine wounded in action on the same period.^[119] The same sources claimed that the Ukrainian military lost another BMP during an ill-fated attempt to storm the buffer zone around Leninske,^[120] which also became the target of 152 mm self-propelled artillery.^[121] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported that Ukrainian troops from Novozvanivka shelled Kalinove with 120 mm mortars.^[122]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 21 occasions. Most incidents occurred in the region of Mariupol, where Shyrokyne, Lebedynske, Vodiane and Pavlopil came under 122 mm artillery fire. The rebels also poured 120 mm mortar rounds on these areas and on Ukrainian troops near Talakivka. West of Donetsk city, pro-Russian sources fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka. Pro-Russian tanks, supported by armoured fighting vehicles and mortar fire, engaged Ukrainian redoubts at nearby Marinka and Krasnohorivka. Rocket propelled grenades landed in Novooleksandrivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line.^{[123][124][125]}

15 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 42 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 12 occasions in Luhansk region.^{[126][127][128]} The Luhansk Regional State Administration reported in the morning that 18 ceasefire violations by pro-Russian forces had taken place on 14 October, and that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed by artillery fire and one civilian injured in his home by shelling.^[129] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 14 October. The casualties occurred in the region of Mariupol (at Shyrokyne and Vodiane) and in the suburbs of Horlivka (Zaitseve); besides that one Ukrainian soldier was contused by shelling near Vodiane, Lysenko added.^[130] Regarding the two deaths, that were reported by the authorities of the Luhansk Oblast, Lysenko claimed at noon that these were not combat related.^[130][131] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 608 occasions. Ukrainian tanks and 152 mm howitzers shelled Sakhanka, Bezimenne, Leninske and Semnadtsat, also pounded by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. Ukrainian tanks also engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Yasinuvata, which was in the same way rocked by the explosions of 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys and 122 mm and 152 mm artillery rounds. The Ukrainian military also employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack the settlements of Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Dokuchaievsk, Novolaspa, Velaya Kamyanka, Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district. Three pro-Russian servicemen were killed and other three wounded in action.^[132] Authorities from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic recorded eight Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic borders. Ukrainian forces from Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka and Troitske targeted Kalinove with small arms, automatic grenade launchers, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms and automatic grenade launchers firing from Zolote harassed pro-Russian troops at Mariivka.^[133]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 23 occasions. The epicenter of the incidents was the region of Luhansk, in the northern section of the demarcation line, where heavy shelling was reported. Novozvanivka became the target of small arms, 82 mm mortars, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery, while Novooleksandrivka was fired at from 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.^[134] In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian troops at the village of Mariupol,^[135] supported by small arms, heavy machine guns and 120 mm mortars. Around Donetsk city, Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka and Troitske were harassed with small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire, while 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Krasnohorivka and Marinka, where light weapons fire was also reported. West of Horlivka, rebel troops engaged Ukrainian entrenchments at Novhorodske with small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.^[134]

16 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 43 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 19 occasions in Luhansk region, on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.^{[135][136][137]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 15 October. The casualties occurred in Marinka.^[138] According to pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city, the Ukrainian army opened fire 408 times on their troops. Ukrainian forces used 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars to shell Oleksandrivka, Yasinuvata, Abakumove coal mine, Trudovske, Sakhanka, Mihaylivka, Vasiilivka and Spartak. The Ukrainian artillery also poured 152 mm artillery rounds on Trudovske, while Vasiliivka, Zaitseve, Horlivka, Zhabicheve, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport were fired at from small arms, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles.^[139][140] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the territory of the republic. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Stanytsia Luhanska engaged pro-Russian positions at Knyaz Igor memorial. Kalinove was the target of 120 mm mortars firing from Popasna, Novooleksandrivka and Novozvanivka, while 120 mm mortar barrages from Popasna landed in Stakhanove.^[141]

Most incidents took place in the region of Mariupol, where pro-Russian forces employed small arms, rocket propelled grenades, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were the Ukrainian strongholds of Shyrokyne, Lebedynske and Vodiane. In Luhansk region, the northern section of the demarcation line, the rebels shelled Popasna and Bohuslavske with 120 mm mortars and 122 mm artillery. West of Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka,^[142] while residential areas of Krasnohorivka and Marinka came under 120 mm mortar and 122 mm artillery fire.^[143] Donetsk People's Republic prime minister, Alexander Zakharchenko, confirmed the death of Sparta Battalion commander, Arseny Pavlov, better known as "Motorola", killed by an IED explosion in his apartment's elevator in Donetsk city. Zakharchenko said the assassination was carried out by a "Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group", and that the killing was a "ceasefire violation" and a "declaration of war" by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.^{[144][145][146]}

A male civilian was injured in Kruta Balka in the afternoon.^[147]

17 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 61 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 9 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 29 occasions in Luhansk region.^{[148][149][150]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian servicemen was killed and seven others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 16 October.^[151][152] Pro-Russian officials reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on 398 occasions on their positions in the region of Donetsk, most of them using heavy artillery and mortar fire. The targets were Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Gagarin mining complex, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Sakhanka, Bezimenne, Leninske, Verkhnyotoretske, Spartak, Horlivka and Donetsk city.^[153] One pro-Russian soldier was killed and three others wounded in heavy clashes around Leninske, east of Mariupol.^[154] According to sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic the Ukrainian military broke the truce on two occasions inside the republic boundaries. Stakhanove came under 120 mm mortar fire and Zolote was the target of automatic grenade launchers.^[155]

Heavy shelling also took place at Shyrokyne and Vodiane, pounded by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian troops at Novotroitske received small arms fire. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, Verkhnyotoretske came under mortar fire, while Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka were fired at from small arms and grenade launchers. Luhanske, north of Horlivka, was likewise raked by small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Pro-Russian forces also attacked Nvooleksandrivka, in the northern front, with light weapons and rocket launchers.^[156]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 29 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 20 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 6 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 3 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city.^{[157][158][159]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and four others contused in action in the Donbass region on 17 October.^[160] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city said that that Ukrainian forces opened fire on their positions on 253 occasions. The Ukrainian military shelled Bezimenne, Sakhanka and Leninske with 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Bezimenne was also the target of 152 mm howitzers, while 82 mm mortar barrages landed in Spartak, Zhabunki and Donetsk airport. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles opened up on pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Horlivka, Zaitseve and Sakhanka, which also came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.^[161] Sources from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported five Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian army shelled Pervomaisk and Kalinove with 122 mm self-propelled artillery from Popasna and Novozvanivka and Mariivka with 120 mm mortars firing from Luhanske. Sokolniki and Knyaz Igor memorial were the target of automatic grenade launchers fired by Ukrainian troops from Krymske and Stanytsia Luhanska.^[162]

An elderly man was injured by small-arms fire in Staromykhailivka.^[164]

The spokesman of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Merkel has invited President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, and President Francois Hollande of France to "assess the implementation" of the Minsk agreements.^[165][166] Putin agreed to attend the 19 October meeting at Berlin.^[167]

19 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 57 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 44 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 10 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city.^{[168][169][170]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian servicemen was killed and another wounded in action in the Donbass region on 18 October. The casualties occurred at Lebedynske.^[171] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city reported that their positions were targeted by Ukrainian forces on 595 occasions. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Sakhanka, Bezimenne, Kominternove and Leninske, which were also struck by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Yasinuvata and Vasiilivka came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Yasinuvata and Vasiilivka also became the target of 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian forces employed small arms, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles to attack rebel troops at Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve and Donetsk airport. Four pro-Russian soldiers were killed and three others wounded.^[172] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on two occasions inside the republic borders, when 120 mm mortar rounds fired from Troitske landed in Kalinove and Lohvynove came under 82 mm mortar fire from Luhanske.^[173]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 21 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 4 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 5 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city. The incidents involved the shelling of Vodiane by 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery, and the attack of armoured fighting vehicles on Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske.^{[175][176][177]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 19 October.^[178] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 481 Ukrainian attacks on their positions on the same period. The Ukrainian forces used small arms, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery to pound the rebel strongholds of Zaitseve, Dokuchaievsk, Horlivka, Trudovske, Oleksandrivka, Spartak, Staromyhailivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, and Oktyabr.^[179][180] Sources from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the republic boundaries. The incidents took place at Knyaz Igor memorial, where pro-Russian troops were the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars firing from Stanytsia Luhanska.^[181]

In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers at Pavlopil and Starohnativka, while 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Shyrokyne and Taramchuk. Around Donetsk city, separatist troops used small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers to pound Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka and Marinka, which were also shelled with 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Krasnohorivka became the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. In the northern front, pro-Russian forces attacked Luhanske and Trokhizbenka with small arms, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars.^[182] One civilian was injured by shelling in Stanytsia Luhanska.^[183]

The participants of the talks on the Ukraine crisis in Berlin agreed to draw up a roadmap by the end of next month to carry out the Minsk peace agreement for eastern Ukraine.^[184] According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the talks with Russian, Ukrainian and French leaders about a stalled Ukraine peace deal "didn't achieve miracles".^[185] According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the talks were "as a whole, positive".^[186]

21 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 41 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 26 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 9 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 6 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city.^{[187][188][189]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 20 October. The casualty occurred in Avdiivka.^[190] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, nine of their soldiers were killed in action and another 13 wounded over the past week.^[191] The same sources reported 3,161 Ukrainian attacks on pro-Russian positions for the same period, 2,477 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery.^[192] Authorities from Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops from Stanytsia Luhanska opened fire on pro-Russian positions at Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.^[193]

In the surroundings of Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka continued to be engaged by pro-Russian tanks. The Ukrainian stronghold also became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, 62 and 120 mm mortars. Rocket propelled grenades and 82 mm mortar rounds landed in nearby Krasnohorivka. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, the rebels fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Ukrainian redoubts around Novozvanivka and Stanytsia Luhanska. In the region of Mariupol, 122 mm artillery barrages landed in Vodiane, while Shyrokyne came under small arms, heavy machine gun, and rocket propelled grenade fire. Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil were harassed with small arms fire.^[194][195]

22 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 39 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 12 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 9 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city. Multiple-launch rocket systems Grad were employed to shell Troitske, while pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian troops at Avdiivka and Verkhnyotoretske.^{[196][197][198]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 21 October.^[199][200] Sources from the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic reported 261 Ukrainian attacks on their troops. The Ukrainian military used heavy weapons 74 times. The targets were Zheleznaya Balka, Zaitseve, Mikhaylivka, Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Sakhanka, Kominternove, Trudovske and Petrovsky district. One pro-Russian serviceman was killed in action.^[201] Luhansk People's Republic officials recorded three Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the republic's territory. The incidents took place at Kalinove, when Ukrainian forces from Troitske and Novozvanivka fired automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars.^[202]

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko announced that henceforth no mobilized serviceman would be present on the frontline.^[295]

3 November

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day, including on 26 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 8 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 13 occasions in Luhansk region.^{[296][297][298]} An attempt of pro-Russian scouts to cross the demarcation line at Novozvanivka was beaten off by Ukrainian forces.^[299] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 2 November. The casualty occurred in the region of Avdiivka.^[300][301] Two volunteers of Aidar Battalion were killed and several wounded.^[302] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city recorded 402 Ukrainian attacks on pro-Russian positions. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 152 mm howitzers. North of Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Ukrainian redoubts at Luhanske. In the region of Mariupol, rebel forces engaged Ukrainian troops at Talakivka, Shyrokyne, Lebedynske, Pavlopil, Bohdanivka and Vodiane with small arms, heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Rebel forces fired small arms and grenade launchers at Novozvanivka, Syze and Trokhizbenka, in the northern section of the demarcation line.^[305]

4 November

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 31 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day, including on 17 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 7 occasions in Luhansk region.^{[306][307][308]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and two others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 3 November.^[309] One wounded serviceman died of wounds in a hospital of Zaporizhia, Lysenko added.^[310] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city recorded 3,810 attacks on their troops over the past week.^[311] One pro-Russian soldier was wounded when Ukrainian troops from Luhanske fired small arms on the village of Lohvynove on two occasions, according to authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.^[312]

The Ukrainian military engaged the rebels with small arms, rocket launchers, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 152 mm howitzers. Most incidents took place at Zaitseve, Zheleznaya Balka, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Olenivka, Yasne, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Leninske and Petrovsky district.^[326] In the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire nine times, according to local officials. Armoured fighting vehicles from Troitske engaged pro-Russian positions at Vesela Hora, supported by 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles. Most incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Ozeryanivka, Zheleznaya Balka, Vesele, Nyzhneteple, Zhabicheve, Staromyhailivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Leninske, Oktyabr, Sakhanka, and Petrovsky district.^[357] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic claimed that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions. Ukrainian forces opened fire with 152 mm howitzers on Kalinove from the Kalinove-Popasna railway and Novoivanivka. The pro-Russian stronghold was also shelled from Troitske by 120 mm mortars. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 28 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^{[491][492][493]} including on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 2 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region.^[494] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed in action in the Donbass region on 24 November. The fatality was caused by a sniper bullet in Opytne.^{[494][495][496]} Eduard Basurin, deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, reported that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 950 occasions on pro-Russian positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery.^[497] The main targets were Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromyhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk and Trudovske.^[498] One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action.^[499] The same sources also reported 6,049 Ukrainian violations of the truce over the past week, 2,264 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery. Four civilian residents were killed and another wounded in the same lapse.^[500] According to officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire two times inside the republic's territory. Ukrainian troops from Stanytsia Luhanska shelled pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial with automatic grenade launchers.^[501]

Around Donetsk city, Avdiivka came under 122 mm artillery fire, while north of Horlivka, rebel forces fired small arms, rocket launchers and mortars at Luhanske. Ukrainian troops at Novooleksandrivka and Krymske were harassed with small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.^[502]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 37 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[503][504][505][506]} including on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 5 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region. The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 25 November.^[507] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 1,629 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Vasiliivka, Yasinuvata, Shyroka Balka, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Belaya Kamyanka, Kominternove, Sosnovske, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[508] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic reported that Kalinove came under 120 mm mortar fire.^[509]

One serviceman was injured by explosion of a landmine.^[515][516] A clash between the warring parties took place in the region of Mariupol in the evening.^[517][518] One civilian was injured by explosion of a grenade in Marinka.^[515] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 1,619 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Most incidents occurred at Lebyazhye, Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Sosnowski, Leninske, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Trudovske. One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded in action.^[519] According to authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces from Svetlodarsk poured small arms fire on pro-Russian troops at Lozove.^[520]

According to the information published by the ATO HQ on their Facebook page in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions in the region of Mariupol on 27 occasions.^[521] Overall 34 attacks on Ukrainian positions were registered by 6:00 pm. Around Mariupol, rebel forces used small arms, grenade launchers, mortars and 122 mm artillery to engage Ukrainian positions at Talakivka, Novotroitske, Shyrokyne, Stepne, Hnutove and Pavlopil. Hostile snipers harassed Ukrainian troops at Novotroitske. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, Avdiivka, Marinka and Luhanske came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. In the northern section of the demarcation line, the separatists shelled Novozvanivka, Novooleksandrivka and Zhovte with rocket launchers and mortars.^[522]

28 November

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 37 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[523][524][525]} including on 18 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 5 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 14 occasions in Luhansk region. At least six Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 27 November.^[526] Six wounded Ukrainian servicemen were hospitalised on Saturday-Sunday (26–27 November) in a clinical hospital of Dnipro.^[527] During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 2,079 occasions on their positions on the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian forces at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Yakovlivka, Spartak, Zhabicheve, Kamyanka, Oleksandrivka, Signale, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka and Petrovsky district.^[528] Basurin also said that a group of 15 Ukrainian troops stormed a rebel outpost at Kominternove. The assault was repelled by the defenders, who killed three Ukrainian soldiers and wounded another two.^[529] In the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, local officials claimed that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions. Zhovte was the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars firing from Stari Aidar. Kalinove came under small arms fire from Novozvanivka.^[530] The same sources reported that an attempt to break through the demarcation line by Ukrainian scouts at Zholobok to attack the village of Donetskiy was beaten off by pro-Russian forces. One separatist soldier was wounded in action.^[531]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 38 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^{[534][535][536]} including on 22 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 5 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 11 occasions in Luhansk region.^[537] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian serviceman were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 28 November.^[537][538] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 1,882 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian military pounded rebel positions at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Olenivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka, Nova Tavrya, Sergiivka, Bezimenne and Petrovsky district.^[539] One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action.^[540] In the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, local officials recorded two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. Pro-Russian positions at Lozove came under 120 mm mortar fire from Svetlodarsk, while small arms fire from Novozvanivka was reported at Kalinove.^[541]

The incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Vasiliivka, Kruta Blaka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Novolaspa, Kominternove, Dzerzhinsky, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Petrovsky district.^[550] According to authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Ukrainian forces fired on Pro-Russian positions twice. The violations took place at Knyaz Igor memorial, which was fired at from Stanytsia Luhanska with small arms, rocket launchers and automatic grenade launchers.^[551]

1 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 30 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[554][555][556]} including on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region.^[557] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region during the last day of November. One Ukrainian serviceman was injured by explosion of an explosive device, Motuzyanuk added.^[557][558] One Ukrainian soldier was killed by shelling near Avdiivka.^[559] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 1,308 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian military targeted Horlivka, Ozeryanivka, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Novolaspa, Kominternove, Naverezhne, Leninske, Sosnovkse, Oktyabr, Tavricheske, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Trudovske.^[560] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops from Stanytsia Luhanska shelled pro-Russian redoubts at Knyaz Igor memorial with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles.^[561]

Nearby Krasnohorivka came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire, while Avdiivka received heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Balka Kosharna was the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The rebels also fired rocket propelled grenades at Novooleksandrivka, Troitske and Krymske.^[562][563] Luhansk People's Republic sources claimed that a Ukrainian serviceman driving a BMP surrendered the armoured vehicle and defected to pro-Russian forces near Kirov.^[564]

2 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 42 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[565][566][567]} including on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 8 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 11 occasions in Luhansk region.^[568] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and three others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on the first day of December.^[568][569] The press service of the Luhansk regional state administration reported that one Ukrainian soldier was killed in a skirmish near the village of Novotoshkivske, in the course of an infiltration attempt through the demarcation line by pro-Russian forces supported by 120 mm mortar fire.^[570] Pro-Russian sources from Donetsk city reported 11,599 Ukrainian violations of the truce over the past week, 3,691 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery. Four civilian residents were wounded.^[571] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded three Ukrainian violations of the truce. Kalinove was shelled from Troitske with 120 mm mortars, while 82 mm mortar volleys fired from Syze landed in Kievke. Pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial were engaged from Stanytsia Luhanske with small arms fire.^[572]

A USAF RQ-4 Global Hawk strategic drone departing from Sigonella air base carried out the first of several reconnaissance sorties to be flown over the demarcation line. The unmanned aircraft maintained a distance of between 60 and 75 km from the front line at an altitude of 50,000 ft.^[575]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[576][577][578]} including on 15 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 13 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 16 occasions in Luhansk region.^[579] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that six Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 2 December.^[579][580] Pro-Russian officials in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 1,205 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Vasiliivka, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Leninske, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Trudovske. One civilian resident died of wounds at Horlivka.^[581] Meanwhile, in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local authorities reported six Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. A medical aeroplane that was scheduled to transport 11 wounded Ukrainian servicemen to a military hospital in Lviv had to land in Vinnytsia instead due to bad weather conditions.^[585]

The main targets were Zaitseve, Horlivka, Yasinuvata, Staromyhailivka, Bela Kamyanka, Oleksandrivka, Leninske, Sakhanka, Zabicheve and Petrovsky district.^[591] The Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire on two occasions within the boundaries of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. Ukrainian forces from Krymske shelled pro-Russian redoubts at Sokolniki with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles were fired from Stanytsia Luhanska at rebel positions around Knyaz Igor memorial.^[592]

The Ukrainian army attacked rebel positions at Yasinuvata, Vesele, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka, Oktyabr, Dzerzhinsky, Oleksandrivka, Trudovske, Staromykhailivka, Olenivka and Dokuchaievsk.^[600][601] One pro-Russian serviceman was killed by sniper fire.^[602] According to local officials, there were four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. In the same area, heavy machine gun fire was reported at Opytne, while mortar rounds landed in Luhanske, north of Horlivka.^[604][605]

Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, speaking in Brussels, characterised the security situation in eastern Ukraine as extremely serious.^[606]

6 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 26 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[607][608][609]} including on 14 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 6 occasions in Luhansk region.^[610] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another wounded in action in the Donbass region on 5 December.^[610] In his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 1,295 occasions on their positions over the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian forces at Trudovske, Oleksandrivka, Staromykhailivka, Olenovka, Zaitseve, Ozeryanivka, Vasiliivka, Kruta Balka, Zhabichevo, Yasne, Kominternove, Leninske and Sakhanka.^[611][612] Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on four occasions inside the territory of the self-styled Luhnask People's Republic. Kalinove was fired at from Troitske by small arms and automatic grenade launchers, while the pro-Russian checkpoint near Stanytsia Luhanska was shelled by automatic grenade launchers and under-barrel launched grenades. Ukrainian troops from Krymske fired 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles on pro-Russian positions at Sokolniki. Small arms and under-barrel launched grenades firing from Seversky Zhovte hit Youzhny Zhovte.^[613]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 45 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[616][617][618]} including on 28 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region.^[619] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and one soldier contused in action in the Donbass region on 6 December.^[619][620] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 2,453 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The main targets were Vasiliivka, Verkhnyotoretske, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Yasne, Olenivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Leninske, Oktyabr, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[621] According to local authorities, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire four times within the borders of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Pro-Russian troops at Kalinove became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka. An 82 mm mortar volley fired from Luhanske landed in Nyzhne Lozove, while pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial were fired at from Stanytsia Luhanska with small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles.^[622]

Slavne and Shyrokyne were fired at by grenade launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the surroundings of Donetsk city, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Ukrainian forces at Avdiivka, which also came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. Rebel troops shelled Krasnohorivka with 82 mm mortars.^[623][624]

8 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 20 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day;^{[625][626][627]} no ceasefire violations were recorded in Luhansk region.^[628] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 7 December.^[628][629] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 1,066 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian military attacked Zaitseve, Ozeryanivka, Vasiliivka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Vesele, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Olenivka, Dokuchaievsk, Novolaspa, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka, Kuibyshev and Petrovsky district.^[630] One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action.^[631] The military spokesman of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, Major Andreiy Marochko, reported no Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic borders, but he described the situation as "tense".^[632]

The United Nations released a report, according to which the Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has recorded 32 conflict-related civilian deaths and 132 injuries between 16 August and 15 November. The total death toll from mid-April 2014 to 1 December 2016 was 9,758, with another 22,779 people injured.^{[636][637][638]}

9 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[639][640][641]} including on 2 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region.^[642] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 8 December.^{[642][643][644]} Pro-Russian sources from Donetsk city reported 10,603 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire over the past week, 3,456 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery. Three civilian residents were wounded.^[645] According to local officials, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire four times within the borders of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Zhovte was shelled twice with automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars, while automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles firing from Novozvanivka hit pro-Russian positions at Kalinove. Rebel troops around Frunze came under small arms fire from Krymske.^[646]

In the northern sector of the demarcation line, separatist troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and several types of rocket propelled grenades at Novotoshkivka, Krymske and Shariv Kut. Sniper fire was reported at Zhovte. Around Donetsk city, small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers were fired at Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka, while 82 mm mortar barrages landed in Krasnohorivka. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles shelled Shyrokyne, which also became under sniper, rocket propelled grenade and 122 mm artillery fire. The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 70 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[658][659][660][661]} including on 39 occasions in the region of Mariupol.^[662] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were killed and two others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 10 December.^[662] The fatalities were caused by shelling in the region of Krasnohorivka, where also one serviceman was wounded;^[662] another Ukrainian soldier was wounded not far from Verkhnyotoretske.^[662] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces opened fire 2,903 times on their positions using light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian army targeted pro-Russian positions at Trudovske, Oleksandrivka, Staromikhailovka, in the west of Donetsk City, Olenivka, Zaitseve, Nova Tavrya, Hryhorivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, Kominternove, Naberezhne, Vasiliivka and Spartak.^[663] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire within the borders of the republic. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Lobacheve engaged pro-Russian positions at Zhovte, supported by 120 mm mortars, 82 mm mortars, automatic grenade fire and small arms, while Ukrainian forces from Mironovskiy shelled Kalinove with 152 mm self-propelled artillery.^[664]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 42 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[676][677][678]} including on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 6 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 17 occasions in Luhansk region.^[679] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 12 December.^[679] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 859 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Ukrainian forces pounded Horlivka, Zheleznaya Balka, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Kominternove, Dokuchaievsk, Oktyabr, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[680] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire inside the republic's territory when Kalinove became the target of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka.^[681]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 18 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day.^{[692][693][694][695]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no combat related casualties in the Donbass region on 14 December.^[696] One male civilian was killed and two others were injured.^[696] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 1,243 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm self-propelled artillery. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 39 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day.^{[701][702][703]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 15 December.^[700] The casualty occurred at Staryi Aidar.^[700] Pro-Russian sources from Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire 9,041 times on pro-Russian positions over the past week, 2,733 of them using mortars, tanks and artillery. Two civilian residents were killed and other two wounded.^[704] According to authorities form the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the truce inside the republic borders on three occasions. Pro-Russian forces at Zhovte were harassed with small arms firing from Lobacheve, while 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles from Stanytsia Luhanska fired upon pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial.^[705]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 52 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day.^{[708][709][710][711]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 16 December.^[712] The casualties occurred at Nevelske.^[712][713] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces opened fire 1,183 times on their positions using light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian army targeted Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka, Spartak, Kruta Balka, Zaitseve, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Leninske, Oktyabr, Nova Tavrya, Bezimenne, Oleksandrivka and Staromykhailivka.^[714] One pro-Russian soldier was killed and two wounded.^[715] According to local officials, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on six occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. Most incidents occurred in the region of Mariupol, where the rebels shelled Vodiane with 122 mm and 152 mm artillery. Shyrokyne, Pavlopil and Lebedynske came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire, while Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil, Starohnativka and Shyrokyne were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire. In the surroundings of Donetsk city, Krasnohorivka was struck by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys, while 122 mm artillery barrages landed in Nevelske. In the northern section of the demarcation line, rebel forces launched antitank guided missiles on Ukrainian positions at Novozvanivka, while Stanytsia Luhanska and Troitske became the target of rocket propelled grenades and mortar fire.^[717][718]

18 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 40 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^[719][720] including on 25 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 10 occasions in Luhansk region, and on 5 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city.^[721][722] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no combat related casualties in the Donbass region on 17 December.^{[721][722][723]} Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 960 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Most incidents occurred at Horlivka, Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Panteleymonivka, Kominternove, Naverezhne, Leninske, Sakhanka, Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Mineralne, Dokuchaievsk, Oleksandrivka and Trudovske. One pro-Russian soldier was wounded in action.^[724] Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire on five occasions inside the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, reported local authorities. Pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial were engaged by small arms, automatic grenade launchers, rocket launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and armoured fighting vehicles from Stanytsia Luhanska. Kalinove became the target of 82 mm mortars and 152 mm self-propelled artillery.^[725]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions repeatedly, mainly in the regions of Mariupol (on 25 occasions^[726]) and Donetsk city. Pro-Russian tanks attacked Shyrokyne, which was also the target of 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm howitzers. Mortar volleys of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars also landed in Hnutove, Vodiane and Talakivka, while Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil came under small arms fire. Sniper fire was reported at Marinka, southwest of Donetsk city. Novooleksandrivka, in the northern section of the demarcation line, became the target of heavy machine guns and grenade launchers.^[727] The ATO HQ published on their Facebook page information according to which five Ukrainian servicemen were killed and six others were wounded during a two-hour engagement – at a stretch between the militant-controlled town of Horlivka and Svitlodarsk dam – that started at around 5:50 am.^{[726][728][729][730][731]} Later in the evening it was reported that the death toll had risen to six, the number of wounded Ukrainian servicemen had risen to twenty-six.^[732][733] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported a major breakthrough attempt by Ukrainian forces in Kalynivka, near Debaltseve. The three-pronged assault resulted in two Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles destroyed and the death of at least ten Ukrainian servicemen. Two pro-Russian soldiers were reported wounded and other two missing.^{[734][735][736]}

19 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day.^{[737][738][739]} The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Andriy Lysenko, reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were killed and six others were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 18 December.^[740][741] Ten more servicemen were contused and injured, Lysenko added.^{[740][741][742]} During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 1,680 occasions on their positions over the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian forces at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Zheleznaya Balka, Ozeryanivka, Vasiliivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Vesele, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Bela Kamyanka, Kominternove, Naberezhne, línea de costa, Sosnovske, Nova Tavrya, Leninske, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Trudovske.^[743] The commander of the Luhansk People's Republic military, Colonel Oleg Anashchenko, dubbed the 18 December Ukrainian offensive "a complete failure".^[744] He later claimed that the Ukrainian army lost three armoured fighting vehicles and 12 soldiers.^[745] During 19 December, Ukrainian forces continued to shell the area of Lohvynove and Kalynivka with mortars and 152 mm self-propelled artillery.^[746][747]

According to the information published by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 30 occasions.^[748][749] Luhansk People's Republic Major Andreiy Marochko said that three Ukrainian soldiers died and four others were wounded in the course of another attempt to break through pro-Russian lines near Kalynivka.^[750] According to the same sources, Ukrainian troops resumed the shelling near Debaltseve late in the evening.^[751]

20 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 47 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[752][753][754]} including on 11 occasions in Luhansk region and on 27 occasions in the region of Mariupol.^[755] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, ten were wounded, and eight contused in action in the Donbass region on 19 December.^[755][756] All the casualties occurred in the region of Svitlodarsk salient.^[755][757] Three groups of pro-Russian scouts were beaten off in the region of Svitlodarsk salient at around 10:30 am, 20 December, Motuzyanyk added.^[755] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces opened fire 1,579 times on their positions using light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian military targeted Zaitseve, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Mikhaylivka, Ozeryanivka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Zhabicheve, Kruta Balka, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Sakhanka, Sergiivka, Leninske and Trudovske. One pro-Russian soldier was wounded in action.^[758] There were 14 violations of the ceasefire within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, according to local officials. Kalynivka was shelled by 82 mm and 120 mm mortars firing from Luhanske, and 152 mm howitzers from Svitlodarsk, while 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys fired from Luhanske also landed in Lozove, and 82 mm mortar and 122 mm artillery fire from the same location hit Nyzhne Lozove. Ukrainian BMP-2 armoured fighting vehicles from Lobacheve engaged pro-Russian positions at Kruta Hora, supported by under-barrel grenade launchers, automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Rocket propelled grenades from Lobacheve also landed in Zhovte. Ukrainian forces from Stanytsia Luhanska harassed pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms, under-barrel grenade launchers and automatic grenade launchers. Sokolniki became the target of 120 mm mortars firing from Krymske.^[759]

In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by rocket launchers, engaged Ukrainian forces at Talakivka and Berezove. Krasnohorivka, west of Donetsk city, came under rocket propelled grenade fire, while Luhanske, in the Svitlodarsk salient, became the target of 122 mm self-propelled artillery. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Ukrainian redoubts at Syze were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers and armoured fighting vehicles.^[760][761]

21 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 33 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[762][763][764]} including on 7 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and on 13 occasions in Luhansk region.^[765] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Lysenko, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed, four others wounded, and four contused in action in the Donbass region on 20 December.^[765][766] Lysenko confirmed the capture of one Ukrainian serviceman by pro-Russian forces during the skirmish at the Svitlodarsk salient on 18 December.^[765] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 699 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The majority of the attacks occurred at Mineralne, Kruta Balka, Spartak, Vesele, Yasne, Dokuchaievsk, Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Ozeryanivka, Sakhanka, Leninske, Oktyabr, Staromihaylivka, Oleksandrivka and Trudovske.^[767] Luhansk People's Republic Major Andreiy Marochko reported two pro-Russian soldiers killed and two others wounded in the course of heavy fighting in the area of Debaltseve.^[768]

According to the information published by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 16 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Talakivka. The same location along with Shyrokyne was hit by small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the outskirts of Donetsk city, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Avdiivka and Krasnohorivka. Avdiivka and Marinka also became the target of small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers. North of Horlivka, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire was reported at Luhanske. In the northern front, rocket propelled grenades landed in Novozvanivka.^[769][770]

According to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Turchynov –, who visited the Svitlodarsk salient area – the Ukrainian military counterattacked, moved forward and took up new positions, "which gave them an extra advantage over the enemy in this defense sector".^[771]

22 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[772][773][774]} including on 10 occasions in the region of Mariupol and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region.^[775] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that eleven Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 21 December.^[775] The casualties occurred in the region of Svitlodarsk salient.^[775][776] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 968 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian army attacked rebel positions at Zaitseva, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Mineralne, Kruta Balka, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Leninske and Petrovsky district.^[777][778] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the truce on 15 occasions inside the republic boundaries. Kalynivka was attacked seven time from Mironovske and Luhanske with small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 mm self-propelled artillery. Nyzhne Lozove was also hit by 152 mm artillery firing from Mironovske, while Lozove itself became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, 122 and 152 mm self-propelled artillery firing from Mironovske and Luhanske. Pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial were fired at from Stanytsia Luhanska with small arms, under-barrel rocket launchers and automatic grenade launchers.^[779] Pro-Russian media showed the bodies of two Ukrainian soldiers killed in action lying on the snow. The dead servicemen, who took part in the Ukrainian offensive in Svitlodarsk salient, wore winter camouflage jackets.^[780]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^[784][785] including on 9 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region.^[786][787] Nine cease-fire violations were recorded by 7:00 am, 23 December.^[788] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and three others wounded in action in the Donbass region on 22 December.^{[786][789][790][791]} Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 8,043 occasions on their positions over the past week, 2,679 using mortars, tanks and artillery.^[792] There were four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, according to local sources. Heavy shelling was reported at Kalynivka, where pro-Russian positions were struck by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 152 self-propelled artillery firing from Svitlodarsk and Luhanske. Lohvynove was also fired at from Svitlodarsk with 152 mm artillery. Ukrainian troops from Lobacheve attacked Syze with small arms and automatic grenade launchers.^[793]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 50 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[796][797][798]} including on 19 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 19 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region.^[799] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded and four others were contused in action in the Donbass region on 23 December.^{[799][800][801]} During his daily briefing to the press, deputy minister of defence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, reported that Ukrainian troops opened fire on 3,002 occasions on their positions over the last 24 hours. According to the statement, the Ukrainian military used small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, 122 mm self-propelled artillery, 152 mm self-propelled artillery and "Grad" artillery rockets to engage pro-Russian forces at Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Krasny Partizan, Mikhaylivka, Ozeryanivka, Kruta Balka, Zheleznaya Balka, Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka, Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka, Bezimenne and Trudovske. One pro-Russian soldier was killed and another wounded.^[802] He also denounced the Ukrainian policy of seizing small derelict settlements within the buffer zone, like Novo Luhanske, Pavlopil, Vodiane and Pishchevik.^[803] There were ten Ukrainian attacks on pro-Russian forces inside the territory of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, where Kalynivka came under 120 mm mortar and 122 mm and 152 mm artillery fire from Luhanske and Debaltseve was shelled with 152 mm self-propelled artillery firing from Mironovskiy. Kalinove was shelled from Popasna and Troitske with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 120 mm mortars. Kruta Hora and Zhovte became the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars, while pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial came under small arms fire.^[804]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that, despite a Christmas ceasefire, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 23 occasions, the Ukrainian army didn't fire back.^[805][806] According to Ukrainian sources, pro-Russian troops also broke the agreement on the evacuation of dead soldiers from no-land-man in Svitlodarsk salient, when a rescue team was fired on for 40 minutes and forced to withdraw.^[807]

25 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 39 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^{[808][809][810]} including on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 15 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region.^[811] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 24 December.^[811][812] The casualty occurred in Avdiivka. For the first time in 6 days the Ukrainian military suffered no losses in the area of Svitlodarsk salient, Motuzyanuk added.^[811] Pro-Russian sources in Donetsk city said that the Ukrainian military opened fire on 224 occasions on their positions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The majority of the attacks occurred at Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Spartak, Zhabicheve, Oleksandrivka, Kominternove, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[813] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic denounced that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire inside the republic borders on 12 occasions. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Luhanske, supported by small arms and automatic grenade launchers, attacked pro-Russian positions at Kalynivka five times, while Kalinove became the target of 82mm and 120 mm mortars firing from Novozvanivka. Separatist forces at Kalynivka were engaged by small arms and armoured fighting vehicles from Balki Sukhodol and Krymske. The village of Prishchib was also the target of 120 mm mortars from Balki Sukhodol.^[814]

Ukrainian troops at Pavlopil, Starohnativka and Shyrokyne came under small arms, heavy machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire.^[815][816]

26 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 33 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[817][818][819][820]} including on 14 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 16 occasions in the region of Mariupol and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region.^[821] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that five Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 25 December.^[821] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces opened fire 189 times on their positions using light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian military targeted pro-Russian positions at Shyroka Balka, Dokuchaievsk, Yasinuvata, Vasiliivka, Kominternovo and Leninske.^[822] Meanwhile, sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported 12 Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the republic boundaries. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Luhanske attacked pro-Russian positions around Kalynivka, which also was the target of small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Armoured fighting vehicles from Novotoshkivka shelled the separatist stronghold of Zholobok. Pro-Russian troops around Knyaz Igor memorial came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire from Stanytsia Luhnaska. Rebel-held Sokolniki was fired at from Krymske with small arms fire.^[823]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 26 occasions. Pro-Russian tanks engaged Ukrainian forces at Shyrokyne, in the area of Mariupol, on three occasions. The stronghold was also attacked with heavy machine guns, mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Mortar fire was also reported at Talakivka, while Pavlopil and Vodiane became the target of heavy machine guns and grenade launchers. Ukrainian military personnel returned fire in Shyrokyne. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at the Ukrainian strongholds of Avdiivka, Maryinka, Luhnaske and Zaitseve.^[824] Two Ukrainian soldiers were reported missing after contact with them was lost while riding a vehicle near Zolote. They apparently became stranded in hostile territory.^[825]

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported 211 combat and 256 not combat related losses during 2016.^[826][827] The same sources acknowledge the death of eight Ukrainian soldiers during the offensive on Svitlodarsk salient from 18 to 23 December. Another soldier was taken prisoner.^[825]

Ukrainian MP and former commander of the Aidar battallon, Semen Semenchenko, announced the blockade of the trade between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed republics in the Donbass region. The action would be carried out by war veterans.^[828]

27 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 37 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^{[829][830][831]} including on 24 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 12 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region.^[832] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action and two others captured in the Donbass region on 26 December.^[832][833] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 103 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian army engaged pro-Russian troops at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Krasny Partizan, Vasiliivka, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Zhabicheve, Staromykhailivka, Kominternove, Oktyabr, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske. One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action.^[834] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian troops broke the ceasefire within the republic's boundaries on 20 occasions. Twelve incidents took place at Kalynivka, where pro-Russian forces were engaged with small arms, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles from Luhanske. Logvinove was pounded from 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, also firing from Luhanske. Ukrainian forces at Stanytsia Luhnaska harassed pro-Russian troops at Knyaz Igor memorial with small arms and rocket propelled grenades. Zholobok became the target of small arms, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars from Krymske and Novotoshkivka. Ukrainian troops from Krymske shelled Frunze with automatic grenade launchers, while rebel positions at Novokiivka came under small arms fire from Sharov Kut.^[835]

In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, 82 mm mortar barrages hit Avdiivka, Luhanske and Novhorodske. The separatists also fired heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Nevelske, Maryinka, Mironovskiy, Luhanske and Zaitseve. In the northern section of the demarcation line, pro-Russian armoured personnel carriers engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Novozvanivka and Novooleksandrivka supported by heavy machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades.^[836][837]

28 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 44 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[838][839][840]} including on 15 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 25 occasions in the region of Mariupol and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region.^[841] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 27 December.^[841] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city said that Ukrainian forces opened fire 533 times on their positions using light weapons, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The main incidents occurred at Zaitseve, Horlivka, Shyroka Balka, Krasny Partizan, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Nikolaevka, Hrihorivka, Kominternove, Oktyabr, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[842] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic denounced that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on seven occasions within the republic boundaries. Kalynove came under 82 mm mortar fire from Luhnaske four times, while rocket launchers from Stanytsia Luhanska shelled pro-Russian positions around Knyaz Igor memorial. Slavyanoserbsk became the target of 82 mm mortars firing from Krymske.^[843]

The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 22 occasions. In the northern front, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Balka Kosharna. Small arms fire was reported at Krymske and Malynove. In the area of Horlivka, Ukrainian forces received small arms and mortar fire, while Ukrainian troops at Zaitseve and Novoselivka were harassed with small arms fire. In the region of Mariupol, rebel troops fired small arms and heavy machine guns at Starohnativka, Shyrokyne and Novotroitske. Southwest of Donetsk city, 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Krasnohorivka and light weapons were used against Ukrainian outposts at Maryinka.^[844]

29 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 50 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^[845][846] including on 29 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 15 occasions in the surroundings of Donetsk city, and on 6 occasion in Luhansk region.^[847] 13 attacks were reported during the first hours of 29 December.^[848][849] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and two others were wounded in the Donbass region on 28 December.^[847] One of the fatalities occurred in Kruta Balka, Yasynuvata Raion, as a result of an armed clash between the warring neighbours.^[847][848] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 473 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian army attacked pro-Russian positions at Oleksandrivka, Horlivka, Zaitseve, Shyroka Balka, Yasinuvata, Verhnyotoretske, Vasiliivka, Kruta Balka, Leninske, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[850] Deputy minister of defence of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, claimed that Ukrainian scouts attempted an assault on pro-Russian positions at Kruta Balka. The attack was beaten off by the defenders, who killed three Ukrainian soldiers and wounded four. A video provided by the separatists shows the dead body of a Ukrainian servicemen on the snow.^[851] Meanwhile, sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic reported eight Ukrainian violations of the truce inside the republic boundaries. Ukrainian BMP-2 armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian positions at Frunze and Smile, in the first case supported by AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars and in the second instance along with ZU-23-2 antiaircraft guns. Kalynove was attacked two times with automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured fighting vehicles from Luhanske. Sanzharivka was shelled from Troitske with 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles.^[852]

According to the information published by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 5:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 25 occasions. In the region of Mariupol, separatist forces fired small arms and rocket launchers at Shyrokyne, Talakivka, Pavlopil, Vodiane and Hnutove. Sniper fire was reported at Hnutove. The same kind of weapons were used against the Ukrainian strongholds around Donetsk city like Avdiivka, Kruta Balka, Verkhnyotoretske and in the area of Horlivka, like Zaitseve, Luhanske, and Troitske, while mortar volleys landed in Krasnohorivka, southwest of Donetsk city. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, Malynove and Balka Krutenka became the target of small arms and grenade launchers.^[853][854]

30 December

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 45 occasions on Ukrainian troops the previous day,^{[855][856][857]} including on 13 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 24 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region.^[858] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in action in the Donbass region on 29 December.^[858][859] One serviceman was reported dead and another four injured in non-combat related incidents.^[860] Pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk city released an annual report on Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. According to them, Ukrainian forces opened fire on pro-Russian positions on 143,613 occasions through 2016, 78,223 of them using banned heavy weapons. The same sources accused the Ukrainian military of killing 314 civilians and injuring 406.^[861] According to a similar report elaborated by officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, the Ukrainian army broke the ceasefire 1,369 times within the republic borders during 2016.^[862] Earlier, Luhansk People's Republic authorities had recorded five Ukrainian attacks over the past 24 hours. Ukrainian forces from Novozvanivka shelled Kalynove with automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles. The same kind of weapons firing from Troitske hit Kalinivka, which also came under small arms and 82 mm mortar fire from Luhnaske. Pro-Russian troops at Krasny Yar were also harassed with small arms fire from Stanytsia Luhnaska. Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles from Krymske engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Khoroshche.^[863]

Pro-Russian forces attempted to break out in the area of Popasna, in the northern section of the demarcation line. In the same area, the rebels shelled Novozvanivka with 82 mm mortars, and harassed Ukrainian troops at Novo Kondrashchevke, Novooleksandrivka, Krasne Hnilishche and Novozvanivka. Small arms fire was reported at Yuzhne, Marinka and Opytne, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, while in the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne and Talakivka came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar fire. Small arms and heavy machine gun fire raked Ukrainian outposts at Hnutove, Lebedynske and Shyrokyne.^[864][865]

31 December

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 48 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,^{[866][867][868]} including on 23 occasions in the region of Mariupol, on 9 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and on 15 occasions in Luhansk region (including one close combat engagement).^[869] The spokesman of the Presidential Administration on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in action in the Donbass region on 30 December. The casualty occurred in the region of Novooleksandrivka.^{[869][870][871]} Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported that Ukrainian forces opened fire on rebel positions on 123 occasions using small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. The Ukrainian military attacked Zaitseve, Horlivka, Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Oleksandrivka, Dokuchaievsk, Kominternove, Dzerzhinsky, Sakhanka and Trudovske.^[872] According to local authorities, there were six Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in the territory of the self-prolaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The village of Krasny Yar was fired at on three occasions from Novo Kondrashchevke with small arms and rocket launchers. Kalinivka came under small arms and 82 mm mortar fire from Luhanske, while 120 mm mortar volleys fired from Novozvanivka landed in Kalynove.^[873]

According to the information published by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on Ukrainian positions on 20 occasions. In Vodiane, Mariupol region, rebel forces fired at Ukrainian troops with 122 mm artillery. Shyrokyne, Pavlopil, Hnutove, Vodiane and Starohnativka came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. Around Donetsk city and Horlivka, Ukrainian redoubts at Krasnohorivka, Kruta Balka and Zaitseve were the target of the same kind of weapons. Sniper fire was reported at Maryinka. In the northern section of the demarcation line, rocket propelled grenades landed in Novozvanivka and Novo Kondrashchevke.^[874]
