Taldykorgan (Kazakh: Талдықорған, translit. Taldyqorǵan; Russian: Талдыкорган), known as Taldy-Kurgan until 1993, is the administrative center of Almaty Region, Kazakhstan. Population: 123,038 (2009 Census results);[1] 97,996 (1999 Census results).[1] Most of the people are Kazakhs.

Education

Taldykorgan has a diverse educational system, including a university, institutes, institutions, technical training colleges, secondary schools and kindergartens. There are 27 public health facilities, a theater, amusement parks, libraries, a city cinema, stadium, sports complex and swimming pools. All of the facilities have not been maintained since the Soviet era.[2]

Climate

In Taldykorgan, the climate is cold and temperate. There is more rainfall in winter than in summer. The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is Dsa. The average annual temperature in Taldykorgan is 7.7 °C (45.9 °F). About 370 mm (14.57 in) of precipitation falls annually.

Transport

Taldykorgan Airport services a number Kazakh and Russian cities, while its train station, 30 kilometers outside of the city center, services Central Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Russia, Baltic States and the People's Republic of China.

Sport

The city has a football club, FC Zhetysu Taldykorgan.[5][6]

  • Mirat Sarsembayev (born 1986) - amateur boxer from Kazakhstan, best known for winning the flyweight bronze at the 2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships.
