Shegaon pronunciation  is a town and municipal council in Buldana district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Shegaon has gained renown as a pilgrimage center because Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj lived there. Hindus consider Gajanan Maharaj a saint.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Shegaon had a population of 52,418. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shegaon has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 66%. In Shegaon, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Shegaon is located around 300 km west from the city of Nagpur and 550 km east from the city of Mumbai. By road it is well connecting by neighbouring cities like Khamgaon, Balapur, Malkapur and Akola which are located on Hajira (Surat)- Dhule - Howrah (Kolkatta) National Highway 6.

Shegaon Railway station is located on the Nagpur-Mumbai line of the Central Railway of Indian Railways. It has direct train connectivity to Mumbai CST, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Secunderabad, Pune, Tatanagar, Ahmedabad, Okha, Kolhapur, Amravati, Wardha, Nagpur, Gondia, Bilaspur, Howrah-Kolkata, Shalimar-Kolkata, Chandrapur, Chennai Central. From Mumbai several trains halt at Shegaon. Prominent being Gitanjali Express, Vidarbha Express, Amravati Superfast Express, Mumbai Howrah mail and express, Sewagram express, Nagpur-Pune express, Navjivan Express, Gondwana Express, Maharashtra Express, Okha-Puri Express and Ltt - Shalimar Exp.[2]

Education

Most of the colleges are affiliated with Amravati University. Shegaon has an ITI (Industrial Training Institute). The Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj College of Engineering (SSGMCE) is a major institute in the region.[3] The Sansthan also runs other institutes such as Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj English Medium School, Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Warkari Shikshan Sanstha, Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Adiwasi Ashram School, Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Mentally Retarded School, Mauli college of Engineering, Siddhivinayak Technical Campus and Saraswati college of Computer Application.

Industry

Shegaon has traditionally been a big market for cotton. Cotton from ginning and pressing mills of Shegaon used to be transported directly to textile mills in Mumbai via goods trains. British textile companies like Rallis India had their procurement office in Shegoan during pre-independence days. Many ginning and pressing mills like M. M. Ginning & Pressing Factory, Bhattad Group of Ginning & Mills, Gajanan Ginning Factory, Bhartia Group of Ginning and Mills are functional in this area.

Shegaon also has engineering industries that manufacture material handling equipment like chain pulley blocks, industrial cranes, and link chain. Shegaon has a mineral water bottling plant, oil mills, paint manufacturing and other industries.

Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Temple

Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj lived there. Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Temple is located here. Hindus consider Gajanan Maharaj a saint, with miraculous powers. His origins are unknown. Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj Temple is built at his place of Samadhi. Sant Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan is the largest temple trust in the Vidarbha region and is known as the "Pandharpur of Vidarbha". It attracts pilgrims from all over Maharashtra.[5]

The Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan (Institution) Temple Trust coordinates the day-to-day affairs of the temple; it is headed by the Managing Trustees, who normally come from the Patil family. The Trust coordinates services in the spiritual, religious, medical and educational fields.

Anand Sagar

Shegaon has a tourist attraction called "Anand Sagar". The project budget is 3 billion INR.[6][7] Anand Sagar area is developed by Shri Gajanan Maharaj Mandir Trust on about 350 acres of land as Spiritual as well as entertainment center for devotees coming to Shegaon. It has all the facilities to make children play & enjoy. There is a good facility of dining at very economical rates. The entire area is nicely developed with lot of greenery and there is a "Light & Music" show daily in the evening in open theatre. There is a Dhyan Mandir created at the centre of the lake in Anand Sagar which is a must see. There is a 30-35 feet high statue of Swami Vivekananda above a meditation cell at the centre of the water reservoir which is a replica of famous Vivekananda Kendra at Kanyakumari. This also include Swami Vivekananda Sanskrutik Kendra and Sadhana hall. There is a big Amphitheatre (seating capacity 3500) to organize cultural activities, functions and exhibitions. Also a very nicely displayed & arranged "Aquarium". It can be planned as a one day picnic with a spiritual exposure. There is also a mini train journey. Free to and fro bus service by Sansthan is available from Mandir to Anand Sagar, starting from Bhakta Niwas Complex. Those devotees has not their own vehicle can use this service.[8]

The water reservoir being developed on 55 acres of land on the Site and takes care of water supply needed for all the existing and proposed activities of the Sansthan. Project design incorporates natural drainage system with a further plan of converting drainage nala into a natural stream strewn with stones and rubble and with plantation developed along its sides. The development on the project site is Eco-friendly and aimed at greening and enriching the entire environment.

Shegaon Tehsil

Shegaon tehsil is part of Khamgaon sub-division of Buldhana district. It has area of 436 square kilometres, and consists of 95 villages that have a cumulative population of around 125,000.[9]

Some of these villages are Jalamb, Pahurjira, Bhota, Sagoda, Bhogaon, Dadgaon, Matargaon, Mongaon Digras, Taroda Tarodi, Paharpurna, Manasgaon, Adsul, Zadegaon, Shrikshetra Nagzari, Chincholi Karfarma, Gaigaon, Jawala Palaskhed, Wankhed, Jawala, Janori, Alasana, Kherda, Gawlkhed, Takali, Lasura, Warkhed, Amboda, Lanjud, Pimpri Deshmukh, Tintrav, Gavhan and Taroda Kasaba.[10]
