Magdusa Ka (International title: Misery / lit. You Suffer) is a 2008 Philippine television drama series broadcast by GMA Network. Based from the 1986 film of the same title, the series is the eighth instalment of Sine Novela. Directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes, it stars Katrina Halili, Dennis Trillo and Iwa Moto. It premiered on May 12, 2008 on the network's Dramarama sa Hapon line up replacing Maging Akin Ka Lamang and worldwide on December 3, 2008 on GMA Pinoy TV. The series concluded on August 29, 2008 with a total of 80 episodes. It was replaced by Una Kang Naging Akin in its timeslot.

The series was nominated at the 37th International Emmy Awards for Best Telenovela.

Origin

The movie Magdusa Ka is one of the most notable and well-celebrated movies that garnered numerous awards from various film organizations such as the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) and Urian in 1986. The movie was directed by multi-awarded actor Eddie Garcia and boasts of an enviable cast of dramatic actors such as Dina Bonnevie, Christopher de Leon, Dindo Fernando and the late Nida Blanca.

Premise

Christine Salvador, a poor young waitress raised with love and care by her mother, Victoria "Toyang". She dreams that one day all the sufferings she and her mother currently endure will end. And she wishes that she will be able to do so, with the help of her boyfriend Rodolfo "Rod" Henson. She sees a ray of hope when she discovers she is actually the daughter of a Doliente, a powerful, rich family. Her mother prohibits her from seeing Rod and to go to the Doliente mansion. Christine disobeys her mother because she tells herself that the financial aid from the Dolientes will help their family. But as time passes, she is only fooling herself. She is now enjoying the lap of luxury. When she realizes that this life of luxury only brought her more pain, Christine tries to come back to Toyang but she is now closing doors to her. She must learn to suffer with the consequences of her actions and in the process mend the things she unintentionally destroyed.

Lead cast

Christine is a young woman who wishes to end having to live in poverty. A waitress at a KTV bar, Christine devotes her life and her earnings to her mother, whom she loves very much. But unknown to her she is an heiress to the riches of a wealthy family
Rod starts out as a promiscuous jeepney driver whose only goal in life is to make himself happy. But after meeting the woman who puts others before her, Rod begins to seriously consider his own future.
Millet lives and breathes money, and she will not let anyone, least of all a half-sister she never knew about, to take it from her. Millet will do anything, anything at all, to stay on top of the social ladder.

Supporting cast

All Toyang wants in her life is a better future for her daughter; a future that may not happen because of her daughter’s hard-headedness. When Toyang begins to lose her grip on her daughter, she sets her out to fend for herself.
Bernardo is a rich man who made a mistake many years ago, a mistake that has showed up at his doorstep after many years of absence.
Doña Perla is a woman who believes that the rich should stay rich, and the poor should continue serving the rich. But when her son takes home the grown-up version of his past misdeed, Perla is not happy. And she will make sure that the newcomer will not be coming after her family’s money.
Olivia schemes to be rich, and she continues to scheme to remain rich; and like her daughter, she will not let a new addition to their family take all of her hard-earned money.
Hedy is married, but that doesn’t stop her from having fun once or twice—or twice in the same day. Still able to turn men’s heads, Hedy flaunts her body to get what she wants, regardless if the person she wants is already taken.

Gerry sent away a woman and his son many years ago, and now he is being hounded by the son who wishes to take back what was rightfully his: Gerry’s family name and his money.
Roland enjoys being rich, and he also enjoys being the only son. So when he meets the brother who was part of his father’s past, Roland becomes his worst nightmare.
Violy wants her best friend to be happy, but how can she do that when her friend would rather put others’ happiness before hers?
Sonny may have grown up poor, but his life is rich with love and support from his family. But in a world where money talks, how much is love worth?
Aling Bebang is a woman who is poor and giving. She lives on an island all by herself. She helped Christine when she was drowning in the water and when she was having her baby. She believes whether you are poor or rich, you have a giving heart within you.

Ratings

According to AGB Nielsen Philippines' Mega Manila household television ratings, the pilot episode of Magdusa Ka earned a 24.3% rating.[1] While the final episode scored a 24% rating.[2]
